Among the critical tasks being executed are breeding and seed production of endemic species, upgrading genetic traits of fish stocks, diversifying aquaculture production, managing and monitoring fish health, ascertaining fish feed nutrition, managing open water (Haor, Beel, Kaptai Lake), costal and marine resources, promoting mariculture, managing non-conventional fisheries resources, and developing value-added fish products. Domestic production of fish was 4,621,228 t in the fiscal year of 2020-21, which was 117,857 t more than the previous year (DoF Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) was established in 1984. It is the only national institute for development of the fisheries sector through research and innovation. The Institute was inaugurated with a vision of developing need-based technologies for increasing fisheries productivity of the state. At present, BFRI operates 5 Stations and 5 Sub-stations in different ecological zones, at which a number of technologies have been developed in the field of aquaculture and fisheries. Introducing aquaculture technology innovations and fisheries management strategies are foremost priorities as part of a mission to meet UN SDG 14.
