LITERATURE OF INTEREST (Continuedfrom page 44) Bailey, H. Nakata and H.W. Van der Veer), Chapter 7 on age and growth (R.D.M. Nash and A.J. Geffen), Chapter 8 on the ecology of juveniles and adults (K.W. Able, M.J. Neuman and H. Wennhage), Chapter 9 on trophic ecology (J.S. Link, M.J. Fogarty and R.W. Langton) and Chapter 10 on behavior (R.N. Gibson). The latter chapter should be of particular interest as it does include a section on behavior with respect to aquaculture. Hardy, D. 2006. Scallop Farming. Blackwell Publishing Ltd., Oxford, United Kingdom. 315 p. Hardbound. £69.50. This single-authored book is a second edition volume that incorporates 15 chapters that provide everything one might want to know about scallops and their culture. The chapters are divided into three sections, followed by a rather brief bibliography and an index. The three sections are entitled: General Information, Hands On, and Getting Down to Business. It is obvious from the three section titles, and the fact that references are not included at the end of each chapter, that the book does not use the style that is typically seen in most scientific books devoted to the culture of a particular species or group of species. Included under General Information are a background chapter, one on the farm environment and a third on the biology and ecology of scallops. The Hands On section includes chapters on site selection, spat collection, "getting underway" (which refers to the basics of developing a scallop farm) and four chapters that can probably best fit under the general category of culture methods and practices. The getting down to business chapters deal with business practices, the production cycle, auxiliary activities (such as cultivating other species and tourism oppor- ]WAS available electronically The Journal of the World Aquaculture Society can be accessed electronically by following these five steps from the WAS home page. 1. While references are cited in the t xt as previously mentioned they are few in number (the bibliography runs only a page and a half), so their presence does not disrupt the flow of the text. The book is written in an easy to read style. It is well illustrated with line drawings and photographs. It could be used as supplementary reading by a class on molluscan or general aquaculture and would be an excellent book for those who might be considering or are already involved in scallop culture. Fukuchi, M., and H.J. Marchant. 2007. Antarctic Fishes. Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, Maryland USA. 136 p. Hardbound. $45.00 Antarctic Fishes is not an aquaculture text. Rather, it is an oversized volume that is more of a coffee table type of book. I bring it to the attention of World Aquaculture readers because it is a very attractive volume filled with outstanding illustrations of the various fishes using the art of gyotaku, or fish rubbing. The art is by Boshe Nagase, who is highly skilled in the art. There is an interesting section in the book describing the gyotaku technique and showing the artist in action. The authors include a paragraph on each of the species illustrated that speak to the distribution and other interesting facts about the biology of each. This is an attractive and reasonably priced book for those interested in fish from an artistic standpoint. -Robert R.
