In 2007 he became General Manager of Ocean Reefs and Aquariums, a division of HBOI, that produces clownfish and corals for the aquarium trade, a position he held until his untimely death. The summary above describes only the outstanding contributions Jim made to the aquaculture world. They do not portray the pleasure it was to work and socialize with him. His unorthodox, irreverent and colorful observations of the world brought humor to all who knew him. His always calm demeanor while helping to keep the pot boiling made living and working with him a pleasure. He will always be considered one of the important and respected pioneers in shrimp aquaculture, and he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. During a period of 14 years the hatchery supplied PL to the Granjas farms in Honduras. In 1993 Jim transferred to Fort Pierce from Summerland Key to work in the Shrimp Culture Technologies (SCT) joint venture, where he was given primary responsibility for Shrimp Culture Inc’s (the successor to Sea Farms) participation at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI). Facilities were then leased at a former aquaculture site in Fort Pierce and Jim oversaw the development of the SFI genetic selection program. He also oversaw construction of a maturation and hatchery facility at Cedeno, Honduras to provide additional PL for the SFI farm that had been expanded to over 6,000 ha. Jim managed SCT for over 10 years during which time significant genetic improvement were made in the stocks used at SCT’s operations in Honduras and Venezuela, including specific pathogen free and pathogen resistant animals and elimination of antibiotic use in hatchery and growout phases. In September 2005, when SCI restructured and consolidated all international operations back to Honduras, SCT was shut down.
