Many of the messages I send return undelivered and those members are not receiving the information. The good news is that communication and information exchange with the membership have improved during our term. We have been emailing or posting news on the WAS page and Facebook about announcements of scholarships, opportunities for training, job vacancies and events, and also regularly publishing reports in World Aquaculture magazine. The LACC website was also renewed and updated. This was an old dream of my predecessors and we finally have it done. If you visit our site (www.was.org/lacc/) and browse through the pages, you will find the history of the chapter and its bylaws, an agenda of events about aquaculture in the Latin America and Caribbean, useful links for access to institutions and associations involved in aquaculture in several countries, downloadable material, and “AquaNoticias,” a place for communication between the Board and the membership, and also a place to disseminate useful information. I encourage everyone to contribute to the LACC website; after all, we are here to serve our membership and we can only do so if we receive your input. During the past 20 months I have been honored and proud to work with the Chapter and the WAS Board of Directors. As a member of the Board, I was given the opportunity to understand the complexity of running the Society and its chapters and provided my modest contributions in guiding their future development. In my final President’s column, I take the opportunity to thank the LACC Officers for their collaboration, Mario Stael and John Cooksey for their help with organization of future LACQUA meetings, and especially Judy Andrasko and Carol Mendoza at the Home Office for their help in making activities of our Chapter move forward. In closing, I also would like to acknowledge the support and participation of the LACC membership during the past two years. — Maria Célia Portella, President Korean Chapter, continued from page 5 Planning is well underway for World Aquaculture 2014 (WA2014) in Adelaide on 7-11 June 2014 - “Create, Nurture, Grow,” and for the joint WAS, APC and Korea Chapter WA2015 event that will happen in Jeju, Korea in May 2015. As a Chapter we continue to look at other ways to improve the benefits of membership for WAS in general and for APC members in particular. We are always open to suggestions, so, if you have a good idea, please contact us by email or contact your local APC Country Ambassador or Executive Advisory Council representative. No Country Ambassador in your nation? Well, YOU can volunteer! Just address a letter to Ram Bhujel, our APC Board CA/EAC committee and he will help guide you to becoming a more active part of our chapter. Throughout the region more people have been joining or rejoining WAS and APC. Several current WAS members who were not also APC members have added APC to their membership. If you are not yet a member of WAS or the APC, hopefully the activities we are doing will encourage you to join. The 10th AFAF will be held on 30 April 30 to 4 May 2013 under the theme of “Blue Waters and Green Fisheries” at The Ocean Resort Hotel in Yeosu. The Fourth International Symposium on Cage Aquaculture in Asia (CAA4) and the First China-Japan-Korea Joint Symposium for Fisheries Science will be held together as satellite meetings, organized by the KOSFAS. You can also contact Carol Mendoza at the WAS Home Office directly (CarolM@was.org) to guide you through the procedure to join the APC. Finally we hope to bring more ideas to the WAS Board on how to increase chapter membership, principally by forming a permanent, full-time, staffed secretariat based in Southeast Asia. This position is envisioned to be the cornerstone of the effort to increase membership in the largest area of aquaculture production — the APC region. Assuming that the idea is supported by the WAS Board, we will soon be seeking applicants to fill this position to help coordinate membership promotion and planning and logistics for events in the region.
