The keynotes were followed by special sessions on hunger and malnutrition in various economies and regions around the world, including the USA, Cambodia, Korea, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Uganda and southern India; management strategies to produce nutrient-rich small fish to reduce poverty and malnutrition; evolution and expansion of aquaculture production technologies; and policy changes needed to provide water resources to the poor. This well-organized symposium was a tribute to the tremendous efforts of Dr. Nandeesha and the AFS Indian Branch in soliciting participants from around the globe to discuss strategies to sustainably use aquatic resources to overcome malnutrition and hunger. Finally I want to close by thanking the WAS membership, as well as members of Global Aquaculture Alliance, Aquaculture without Frontiers and the Asian Fisheries Society for their generous donations to offset Dr. Nandeesha’s medical expenses: US$10,975 was collected through the World Aquaculture Society’s donation site for the Dr. M.C. Nandeesha’s Medical Assistance Fund. All funds were transferred to Mrs. Nandeesha in early February.
