54 JUNE 2014 • WORLD AQUACULTURE • WWW.WAS.ORG The aquaculture sector in Germany represents a small area of economic activity because winters are too cold and long for warmwater species, the climate and geography are suboptimal for salmonid aquaculture, the shoreline is ineligible for mariculture, there is severe competition for space and manpower and immense regulatory requirements. The annual production has stagnated at about 40,000 t. Most farms are small-scale family enterprises and focus on high-price, direct marketing of products to consumers. The trout sector is healthy and growing slowly. In contrast, the carp sector has suffered from decreasing customer demand for carp products, the dispersal of the koi herpes virus and growing populations of predators, such as the cormorant.
