When placing the UV sterilizer, allow sufficient clearance to remove UV bulbs during regular servicing. The cartridge filter was connected to the inlet side of the UV sterilizer with 1.9-cm diameter PVC pipe. Fiberglass U-channel pipe clamps and nylon bolts were used to mount the pipe and UV sterilizer (Fig. 10) to the shelving unit. Plumbing. For the rack system, there are two parts to the plumbing: a support system to facilitate attaching the pipes to the shelving and the actual pipes. For the piping support system we attached U-shaped fiberglass channel to the back of the shelving unit by bolting through the horizontal wire racks using 6-mm nylon bolts (Fig. 3). The water supply system consists of three parts: header pipes, supply lines, and an overflow return line. While more complicated than a simple pressurized system, the primary reason for using a header pipe was to ensure that each animal holding tank would have the same flow, regardless of physical position in the rack system. Header pipes were created using a 5.1-cm diameter PVC located just above each row of animal holding tanks (Fig. 11). The header pipe was positioned approximately 2.5 cm above the top of tank lids on each shelf. Header pipes were mounted to the U-channel with pipe hangers and nylon bolts. The header pipe of each row was connected on one side to an overflow return line so that excess water would return to the sump tank. After header pipes were constructed and mounted, fill inlets for individual animal holding tanks were created by installing FIGURE 10.
