16 DECEMBER 2016 • WORLD AQUACULTURE • WWW.WAS.ORG WAS Young Farmers Sponsorship Program Introduction During Asian Pacific Aquaculture 2016, the Industry Relations committee of the World Aquaculture Society implemented, for the first time, a Young Farmers Sponsorship program. The inaugural sponsorship supported two fish farm managers from Indonesia. The aim of this sponsorship program, for local industry where WAS has a conference, is to expose young aquaculture managers to WAS conferences and to recent developments in aquaculture. The criteria adopted by the committee was that potential candidates should be employed at a managerial level, be 28-35 years of age and have worked at a farm for at least five years. They should also have a sufficiently good comprehension of English to follow technical sessions at the conference. The committee worked with Pamudi, U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC), Indonesia Technical Manager, Aquaculture, to identify potential candidates from the freshwater fish industry and with the Marine Fish Farmers Association of Indonesia to identify one from the marine fish farming industry. Unfortunately the association did not make any nominations. The WAS Industry Relations Committee would like to express their thanks to Pamudi for his assistance with this program. The Young Farmers Sponsorship was given to Muhammad Fuadi, a 29-year old freshwater fish farm manager at PT Suri Tani Pemuka - JAPFA. His main activity is research and fry production of African catfish Clarias gariepinus. Fuadi is a graduate of the Technology and Management of Aquaculture program at Bogor University in Central Java, with a specialization in genetics and fish breeding. Below is his written report presented two weeks after APA 2016. My Participation at APA 2016 Muhammad Fuadi I am very grateful to be given the opportunity to attend the Asian Pacific Aquaculture (APA 16) conference and trade show held in Surabaya, West Java from 26-29 April 2016. The theme for APA 16 was “Profitability, Sustainability, and Responsibility for the Future” which the aquaculture industry takes very seriously to progress. Of course, this requires good networking to discuss the best approaches to achieve these three components. Here I describe my experiences attending several sessions. Plenary During the plenary session, Dr. Endhay Kontara gave a presentation on super-intensive farming of Pacific white shrimp. The best results were obtained with a stocking density of 1,000 post larvae/m2, resulting in a production of 107 t/ha. These results show that very large profits can be made using this system which is 500 percent more in comparison with intensive shrimp farming systems. However, the most important thing to consider is whether the waste generated by this super-intensive system is in line with the industry’s aim of achieving sustainability and responsibility towards the ecosystem and the environment. In pond water remediation, a solution such as using probiotics was presented by Dr. Patrick Sorgeloos in the second plenary. Besides that, there are chemical approaches such as the use of coagulants and physical approaches such as filtration, sedimentation, etc. Conference Topics APA 16 covered topics relevant to current developments in aquaculture. These included genetics and reproduction of fish, fish health and disease, feeds and nutrition of fish/shrimp, conservation of the environment, innovation and technology, and economic and management aspects of aquaculture. I spent most of my time at the Eleventh International Symposium on Tilapia in Aquaculture (ISTA 11). The introduction of tilapia to the world arena has made it into a commodity that can easily compete with white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and marine fish (salmon, seabass, grouper, etc). Tilapia can live in a large range of salinities (euryhaline) and according to Hasanuddin in his presentation, tilapia was shown to be a good bioremediatory because it can decrease organic matter by about 25 percent. Therefore, tilapia is highly recommended and relatively easy to farm. I also attended sessions on catfish, nutrition, feed, and biofloc. I looked at the many posters on display. Some of them were very attractive with colorful graphics that described each research project. This is a convenient way to display information. Posters attract the interest of readers who want to know about a particular study. Tilapia At the tilapia session, an interesting presentation was delivered by Nazael A. Madalla from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania, regarding the use of housefly Musca domestica maggots as a protein substitute in feed for tilapia juveniles that are relatively easy to obtain. Maggots are produced indoors by using cattle manure. Maggot flour is used to make feed containing 49 percent crude protein. The best results were achieved when tilapia was fed with maggot powder containing 40 percent crude protein. Maggot flour has the potential to replace fish meal. However, more research is needed to study the feed substrate this housefly so that protein content produced from the maggot can be improved, for example by using a substrate of vegetable waste from traditional markets. Madhav K. Shrestha from Nepal presented a study on the addition of tilapia and sahar Tor putitora in a pond with various cyprinid carps at a ratio of 3:1:10. Even with the addition of these two types of fish in this polyculture, the productivity of carp was not affected. In fact, yields increased from 25 to 33 percent. This polyculture also prevented spawning of tilapia as this will be
