Student Awards at LACQUA16 in Lima, Peru Winners of student awards at the LACC conference in Lima, Peru in November were: For best oral presentation: 1st place ($150) – Gladys Torres for “Evaluación de fitoplancton y variables ambientales en el estuario tropical de Cojimies post terremoto en Mayo 2016 en Ecuador” (Evaluation of phytoplankton and environmental variables in the tropical estuary of Cojimies post-earthquake in May 2016 in Ecuador). 2nd place ($125) – Max Salvatierra for “Caracterización parcial de la secuencia del gen lVP53 del langostino Litopenaeus vannamei y el efecto del estrés térmico sobre su expresión” (Partial characterization of the lVP53 gene sequence of shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and the effect of thermal stress on its expression). 3rd place ($100) – Arturo Aguirre for “Condiciones hipoxicas crónicas y severas en Bahía de Paracas: Consecuencias en el crecimiento de reproducción de la Concha de Abanico” (Chronic and severe hypoxic conditions in the Bay of Paracas: Consequences to the growth of reproduction of the Peruvian scallop). For best posters: 1st place ($100) – Noemi Cota for “Ontogeny of the digestive system in Peruvian grunt, Anisotremus scapularis larvae.” 2nd place ($75) – Kerwin A. Morales for “Efecto de la harina de pescado y vísceras de pollo en la excreción de amonio N-NH3 en juveniles Oreochromis niloticus.” (Effect of fishmeal and poultry viscera on the excretion of ammonia in juvenile Oreochromis niloticus). 3rd place ($50) – Newmar T.D. Soares for “Avaliacão do rendimento de carcaca e residuos de tambaqui alimentados sob crescentes niveis de proteina” (Evaluation of carcass yield and residues of tambaqui fed increasing levels of protein). The organizers of LACQUA and the Board of the LACC are grateful to Pentair, represented by Ricardo Arias, for donation of $600 for the cash prizes awarded to students. The LACC Honors Three at LACQUA16 The LACC annually recognizes individuals who are successfully meeting the challenges of sustainable aquaculture with their work in education, extension, research, industry, government and non-governmental organizations. This year, the LACC honored three individuals. Célia Maria Frasca Scorvo is a Level V research scientist of the Agro-Business Technology Agency (APTA) and is Director of the Research Center of the Eastern Paulista Regional Pole in Brazil. She has 30 years of experience in fish farming and its scientific production and performance on the topics: feed management, best management practices, tilapia production in ponds, rural reservoirs and large-volume cages in hydroelectric reservoirs.. Milthon Bredrichs Lujan Monja is an aquaculture biologist from Peru. He is manager of AquaCenter SRL (AqCen), where he publishes the aquaculture information portal Aquahoy and offers online aquaculture training through Aquaciencias. He is known for his work on information diffusion and education and for the professionalization of aquaculture investment projects in Peru. Christian Berger has 45 years of experience in aquaculture in Peru and elsewhere in research, production, planning and management in aquaculture. He is currently director of the aquaculture engineering program at the Universidad Científica del Sur. He worked on aquaculture research and development for 20 years at the Instituto del Mar del Perú. He developed high-quality balanced feeds for the Nicovita brand. Christian is also founder and President of the Organization for the Sustainable Development of Aquaculture in Peru.
