Aiken had hoped that advertising in the magazine would pay for the costs of publication and distribution. However, that goal was never realized and the Society continues to support most of the costs, a situation which continues to the present. The loyal equipment suppliers and feed companies that have been consistent advertisers in the magazine are to be congratulated. World Aquaculture magazine was not intended to publish original research, although many of the articles do include at least preliminary results or updates of such research. In general, the magazine includes such information as aquaculture development in various countries around the world, the early development of new species, editorials, submissions fromWAS Chapter presidents, a calendar of upcoming meetings, obituaries, new products, and various other topics of interest to the membership. Special editions were sometimes published. The March 1998 issue of WAMwas Dave Aiken’s last after 10 years of outstanding editorial service to WAS by initiating and doing an outstanding job with editing the magazine. Subsequently, I was asked by the WAS Board of Directors to assume the position of Editor-in-Chief. The initial Editorial Board of the magazine included Lou D’Abramo, (Editor, until 2001), Amy Broussard (Layout Editor), Mary Nickum (Associate Editor), Daryl Jory (Associate Editor), William Hershberger (Associate Editor, until 2001), Geoff Allan (Associate Editor, 1999-2001) and Colin Nash (added in 1999). There were a few changes in the Editorial Board over the years, but it largely remained in place from 1998 until I relinquished the position of Editor-in-Chief of the magazine in 2011. The Editor- in-Chief since then is John Hargreaves. Amy Broussard was an outstanding journalist and layout editor until she retired from the magazine in 2012 and was replaced by Linda Noble. Mary Nickum is currently responsible for article solicitation and initial editing of magazine articles. Membership The masthead of many issues of World Aquaculture magazine indicated that membership in WAS and its affiliates exceeded 4,000 individuals in over 100 countries. Ritchie). 1970 – First Meeting (Workshop) of the WMS in Baton Rouge, LA. 1975 – Proceedings of the World Mariculture Society (papers presented at annual meetings) introduced. 1976 – European Mariculture Society becomes the first affiliate of the World Mariculture Society. 1978 – First Triennial meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia. 1979 – The Home Office of the World Mariculture Society established on the campus of Louisiana State University. 1980 – Publication of the first issue of the Journal of the World Mariculture Society. 1984 – Aquaculture Association of Canada becomes the second affiliate of the World Mariculture Society. 1985 – Establishment of the WAS Employment Service. 1986 – World Mariculture Society is changed to World Aquaculture Society and the journal name is changed to Journal of the World Aquaculture Society. 1987 – Caribbean Aquaculture Association becomes the third affiliate of the World Aquaculture Society. 1987 – First Exemplary Service Gold Medal is Awarded (James W. Avault, Jr.). 1988 – Quarterly Newsletter of the World Aquaculture Society is first published as World Aquaculture magazine. 1989 – US Chapter becomes the first Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society. 1989 – Establishment of the Advances in World Aquaculture book series. 1990 – US Chapter of WAS renamed the US Aquaculture Society. 1991 – Japan becomes the second Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society. 1993 – First joint meeting of the World Aquaculture Society and European Aquaculture Society in Torremolinos, Spain. 1993 – Affiliate category eliminated in favor of Associate designation. 1996 – John Cooksey named Executive Director of the World Aquaculture Society. 1996 – First meeting of the World Aquaculture Society in Asia (Bangkok, Thailand). 1996 – Formation of the Asian Pacific Chapter. 1996 – Establishment of World Aquaculture Society website. 2003 – Inception of Aquaculture without Frontiers charity. 2008 – Korean Chapter established. 2011 – First Fellows of the World Aquaculture Society recognitions awarded (Sandra E.
