The followings topics were presented: (1) Abrupt seawater temperature rise and aquaculture in the coastal sea off the southwest coast of Korea (by Prof. Byoung-Ju Choi, Chonnam National Univ.); (2) Biological control of the red-tide using parasite and its perspective (by Prof. Myung Gil Park, Chonnam National Univ.); (3) Golden- tide water in the Jeju Strait (by Prof. Kwang Young Kim, Chonnam National Univ.); (4) Recent trends of seaweed cultivation and strain development in Korea (by Dr. Eun Kyoung Hwang, NIFS); (5) Seed production and cultivation of Sargassum macrocarpum (by Prof. Nam-Gil Kim, Gyeongsang National Univ.); (6) Diseases in Pyropia aquaculture farms and development of disease resistant species (by Prof. Gwang Hoon Kim, Kongju National Univ); and (7) Application of Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) to Wando (by Prof. Jang K. Kim, Incheon National Univ. and Prof. Chang Hoon Kim, Pukyong National Univ.). New Book Commemorates 50 Years of Salmon Releases The MOF has published a book that describes a 50-year memorial of the Salmon Release Project. The book, “Asking the Salmon for the Road,” contains various information related to salmon, including the history of the domestic salmon release business, the ecology and taxonomy of salmon, and statistical data on the salmon release business. In addition, the book includes data of hatch, release and catch by all organizations in Korea and the activities of the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC), an international organization established to manage and preserve salmon resources in Korea. The book can be downloaded from the National Archives of Records ( theme.archives.go.kr) and the Korea National Fisheries Resource Management (www.fira. or.kr) . BusanMetro City Selected as the Smart Aquaculture Cluster The MOF has selected Busan Metro City to be a Smart Aquaculture Cluster. The MOF carried out public procurement in 2018 to promote the introduction of smart aquaculture technology and fostering related industries. Geongsangnam-do Province (Gosung-gun) and Jeollanam-do Province (Shinan-gun) and Busan Metro City (Gijang-gun) applied. Busan Metro City (Gijang-gun) was selected because it has high development potential of marine fisheries research and related industries such as location, concentration of educational institutions, smart aquaculture technology development, manpower planning, fisheries production, distribution, processing, export and equipment. The Smart Aquaculture Cluster will spend a total of 40 billion won (including private investors and local governmental fund) over three years. The MOF and Busan Metro City will create a demonstration farm to introduce smart farming and build infrastructure for clusters such as water and drainage facilities, water and sewage systems, and electric facilities. The benefits of the smart aquaculture cluster are expected to include 1) improved economic efficiency by reducing expenses such as labor and feed expenses; 2) mitigating the aging of aquaculture workers and alleviate labor supply and demand; and 3) improved environmental water quality by supplying appropriate amounts of feed on time with cutting-edge technology using artificial intelligence. Upcoming Events 23rd International Seaweed Symposium(ISS2019) ISS 2019 will take place from April 28 to May 3, 2019 at the International Convention Center in Jeju, Korea. Given Korea’s long history of seaweed aquaculture, with a growing interest in seaweeds as future resources, the scientific theme of ISS 2019 is “Seaweeds: From Tradition to Innovation.” To harmonize tradition ( C O N T I N U E D O N P A G E 7 2 )
