Kameʻeleihiwa has been added to the plenary program. Her presentation will be “Historic O‘ahu FreshWater Fishponds, Making 1 Million pounds of Fish per Year, Just on the Land!” Dr. Kameʻeleihiwa is a senior professor and the Gladys Brandt Chair of Comparative Polynesian Studies at the Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies (KCHS), in the Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Since 1993 she has served as the Director of Kamakakūokalani, most recently from 2014-2017. Trained as a historian, she is an expert in Hawaiian ancestral knowledge and Hawaiian cultural traditions, is active in the Hawaiian sovereignty movement and has written over 23 courses never taught anywhere else in the world. In addition to the more than technical and special sessions previously announced, a new special session has been organized. “Status of U.S. Marine Finfish: Capacity, Resources and Partnership Opportunities to Advance U.S. Aquaculture” will be a full- day special session. It will build on the Aquaculture America 2019 special session: “Status of Marine Finfish Species for U.S. Aquaculture.” Across the nation there are tremendous aquaculture assets at academia, non-profit and agency locations. These assets include infrastructure, research expertise and extension. In recent years public-private partnerships have become more popular as a way for research and industry to work together to strengthen the advancement of aquaculture. This special session invites presentations from academia, non-profits, agencies and industry to present on successes and challenges of public-private partnerships. Topics that would be covered by the speakers will include identification of resources and capacity available to develop public- private partnerships. This could include specialized laboratories and programs, demonstration sites, key species, expertise, production systems, partnership services, lease spaces and agreements. A summary of these assets will be an outcome of this special session. World Aquaculture 2020 in Singapore World Aquaculture 2020 will be held in Singapore from 8 to 12 June 2020 at the Singapore EXPO Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event is being organized by WAS and the WAS-Asian Pacific Chapter with local institutional support from the Singapore Food Agency, Singapore TourismBoard and academic institutions in Singapore. The theme of WA2020 is “Next Generation Aquaculture – Innovation and SustainabilityWill Feed the World.” There will be a four-day conference program and a three-day trade exhibition. The plenary speaker will be Dr. Matthias Halwart from the FAO. His presentation will address the conference theme by speaking on “Aquaculture for Food Security and Sustainable Development.” Dr. Halwart heads the Aquaculture Branch of the Conference Planning Updates FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department and oversees the implementation and development of its work program. He serves as Technical Secretary of the intergovernmental FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) Sub-Committee on Aquaculture and Secretary of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Aquatic Genetic Resources of the FAO Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. During his professional career, Dr. Halwart has covered a broad range of subjects in general aquaculture development, farming systems, biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, and integrated agriculture-aquaculture. Over the past decades, Dr. Halwart has supported aquaculture development through many projects, mainly in Asia and Africa, and through his strategic contributions shaping the aquaculture pillar of FAO’s Blue Growth Initiative. Participants will be able to enjoy several farm tours. One farm tour will take participants from Singapore Harbourfront Ferry Terminal to Batam Island, Indonesia. Participants will be able to enjoy and explore beautiful Batam Island while visiting the Batam Mariculture Development Center. The mariculture production system includes broodstock management, algae production, hatchery, nursery, fish health laboratory and grow-out production system. Planning Underway for First African Chapter Conference in Egypt The African Chapter of WAS will hold its first international conference and exhibition Aquaculture Africa 2020 (AFRAQ2020) in the beautiful city of Alexandria, the pride of the Mediterranean Sea, from 28 November to 1 December 2020. The conference will be held at the famous Bibliotheca Alexandrina, one of the most fascinating tourist and cultural attractions in the world. The conference will offer a great opportunity for aquaculture researchers, practitioners, decision makers and other stakeholders to meet, network and discuss all aspects of aquaculture in Africa. Exhibitors from all over the globe are expected to show their products. Special excursions to nearby fish farms, research centers and feed mills, as well as visits to the well-known tourist attractions in Egypt, will also be arranged. The theme for this inaugural event will be “Sustainable Aquaculture – Feeding Africa.” The Conference will be hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation’s General Authority for Fish Resources (GAFRD), Egypt and its partners, the Central Laboratory for Aquaculture Research andWorldFish.
