This interim report will be peer-reviewed by GESAMP, and then shared with the sponsoring agencies; IMO intends to prepare a brief on the report for its Marine Environment Protection Committee in advance of the MEPC’s meeting March 30 – April 3, 2020. A final technical report is due to GESAMP by the end of 2020. FAO is very interested in this work area as Member Countries realize the need for data, facts and evidence on the extent of the problem as well as the need for prevention and best practices. Microplastics and marine litter pollution are issues that were discussed as recently as August 2019 during the last Session of the COFI Sub- Committee on Aquaculture held in Trondheim, Norway. FAO has already advanced work on microplastics in fisheries and aquaculture, in collaboration with GESAMP and associated UN agencies.
