WWW.WA S .ORG • WORLD AQUACULTURE • JUNE 2021 9 Subsequently, Prof. Su AmKim (Pukyong Nat’l Univ.) chaired the International Seminar on “Future strategies for fisheries research and trends in global fisheries.” Three invited speeches were presented: 1) Processed Seafood – Future and Global Trends (by Prof. Emeritus JaeW. Park, OSU Seafood Research and Education Center, Oregon State University Astoria, USA), 2) Maternal regulation of embryonic and larval competence; evolutionary considerations (by Prof. Christopher L. Brown, FAOWorld Fisheries Univ. Pilot Programme, Pukyong Nat’l Univ.), and 3) Fisheries Research for Achieving UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 14 (byMr. S.M. Nurul Amin (Graduate School of World Fisheries University, Pukyong Nat’l Univ.). Prof. You-Jin Jeon (Jeju Nat’l Univ.), Prof. Jong-Myoung Kim (Pukyong Nat’l Univ.), and Prof. Chang Il Zhang (World Fisheries Univ.) joined in the panel discussion. Four hundred four attendees, 402 domestic and two foreign delegates from the USA and Norway, participated in the on-site and online events. There were nine special lectures, forty-six oral presentations, and 204 posters during the two-day conference. The organizing committee conducted the online/offline meeting with YouTube streaming in real time. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the authority restricted the number of participants according to the guidelines. The conference obeyed the regulation of Level 2 social distancing, the third-highest in the five-tier scheme. Limited numbers of on-site audiences attended each session. National Institute of Fisheries Sciences Launches Field-customized Laver (Gim) SeedManagement Service The National Institute of Fisheries Science launched an on- site consulting and DNA analysis services for laver (gim) breed identification inMarch. The Aquatic Plant Variety Center (located inMokpo, Jeollanam-do) of NIFS strengthened on-site customized consulting to prevent seaweed farmers from violating the matters stipulated in the Fishery Seed Industry Promotion Act wherein a seed producer must obtain a license from the competent local government authority. The Fisheries Plant Variety Center decided to provide on-site customized distribution management services by directly visiting laver seed producers and offer guidance on legal obligations related to the production and sales of seed. To prevent damage to fishers due to the use of illegal seeds that the seed producers are not aware of, the Center provides a DNA analysis service that can identify desirable varieties of laver seeds or those whose species are unknown. The DNA analysis of conchocelis filaments on a shell and free-living cultures was free until last year. This year, the Center offers year-round service, including analysis of fronds, to help eradicate the use of illegal sources. A laver seed producer or fisherman who wants DNA analysis can receive free service by submitting a request formwith a sample (conchocelis free- living filament, shell filament or frond) to the Aquatic Plant Variety Center. The goal is to create an environment where laver farmers can eradicate illegal seeds themselves by implementing on-site customized seed distribution management services. The National Institute of Fisheries Sciences Joins theWorld Federation for Culture Collection The Korean Culture Collection of Aquatic Microorganisms (KoCAM) has become a full member of theWorld Federation for Culture Collection (WFCC) this year. KoCAMwas promoted to WFCCmembership last year. AmongWFCCmember countries, Korea has become the fourth member country globally after Australia, China, and Turkey as a specialized seed bank in the fishery sector. The NIFS has been collecting, preserving, and distributing domestic fishery genetic resources since 2005. For the past 15 years, the fishery field has provided support for distributing fishery germplasm free of charge to universities, research institutes, and industrial companies for use in research. It has contributed to the industrialization of life sciences. International royalties for the use of biological, genetic resources for research and development have become mandatory. The NIFS secures various domestic fishery genetic resources through KoCAM and acquires information to establish national knowledge assets. In Korea, one bank belonging to the conservation organization and the university is acting as a member of theWFCC. 2021 Prospects of Ocean and Fisheries The Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) hosted the 2021 Prospects of Ocean and Fisheries event inMarch through the KMI YouTube channel and the observation conference website. This online conference started with a comprehensive general session and followed with five parallel sessions: general, ocean, fisheries, shipping and logistics and ports. There were six topics in the fishery session: 1) Prospects of the fisheries industry and policy issues (presented byMr. ChangMoMa, KMI), 2) Trends and prospects for coastal and offshore fisheries (byMr. Jung-SamLee, KMI), 3) Prospects and challenges for aquaculture industry (byMr. Nam-Su Lee, KMI), 4) Prospects and challenges for distant waters fisheries (Mr. Myeong-Hwa Jung, KMI), 5) Prospects and challenges for the fishing village society (byMr. SangWoo Park, KMI), and 6) Trends and outlook of seafood trade (by Mr. Sang Geon Lee, KMI). Dr. Myung Saeng Jeong (Head, Fisheries Innovation General Support, KMI) moderated a comprehensive discussion that followed. Panelists discussed themes of carbon neutrality, consumption transformation, the crisis of regional extinction, and the response of fisheries in 2021. In this prospective meeting, they discussed the topics in Korea’s maritime and fisheries industry, which faced changes in internal and external conditions such as the COVID 19 pandemic, changes in leadership in major countries, digitalization, and strengthening of the Green NewDeal. Styrofoam Buoys for Seaweed andOyster Farms to be Banned The use of styrofoam buoys will be prohibited for use on laver farms in 2022 and oyster and other farms in 2023. Only high-density styrofoam (>0.020 g/cm3) buoys that minimize damage can be used for buoys. This amendment was posted on the website of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. Individuals and organizations may submit their opinions to the Aquaculture Industry Division of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries or the National Participation and Legislative Center byMay 17. New KOEMCEO The Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries (MOF) announced that Mr. Kijun Han has been appointed as the 5th CEO of the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM), the former chief C H A P T E R R E P O R T S ( C O N T I N U E D O N P A G E 2 0 )
