World Aquaculture Magazine - September 2021

4 SEP TEMBER 2021 • WORLD AQUACULTURE • WWW.WA S .ORG C H A P T E R R E P O R T S T he COVID-19 pandemic has left an indelible mark on our lives all over the world, especially more so for non-agriculture countries such as Singapore that greatly rely on imported food supplies for local consumption. The negative impact that the pandemic has had on food supply chains was a wake-up call that food security would be an issue if supplies are inadequate or alternative food supply sources are not explored. This further affirmed Singapore’s conviction in striving to strengthen food security through greater food source diversification, alternative food types and developing innovative agrifood technologies for local fish, egg and vegetable production. The importance of aquaculture for food production could not have been more emphasized owing to the rapidly depleting wild catch. The small city-state, Singapore, has become a melting pot of innovations and technologies in aquaculture, attracting global multidisciplinary R&D talent and aquatechnopreneurs keen to pitch their technology for translation and adoption in the rapidly developing local aquaculture industry. As such, aquaculture innovation and aquaculture technologies have also become the focal areas in our thematic webinars jointly organized byWAS-APC and Aquaculture Innovation Centre (AIC), Sinagpore. As part of our effort in staying connected to our members and those supportive of WAS-APC initiatives, two webinars on nutrition and digital technologies for aquaculture production were organized with well-respected experts from the region in June and July. The latter webinar on digital technologies for aquaculture production, which was the seventh webinar held to date, was well received as it bode well with many local and regional aquaculture producers looking at ways to increase production with a smaller footprint and a lower resource and labor requirement. WAS- APCwill continue to plan activities and webinars that would be of interest to our members from the commercial, research and farming sectors. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce Dr. Jean-Yves Mevel as the next President for WAS-APC, who will taking over the helm in the last quarter of 2021. WAS-APC has also just launched the APC Election Ballot online, inviting members to cast their votes on the nominees for the office positions of President-elect and Directors. Information on the candidate’s illustrious careers, industry-working experience and their objectives in serving APCmembers can be found online. We look forward to your support and would appreciate if you could send in your vote online by 26 September 2021. Last but not least, our WA2020 Steering Committee has been working tirelessly with the Singapore event organizers to ensure that safe management measures for COVID-19 would be well taken care of for the upcomingWA2020 Conference. We hope that you could lend us your support and register for the long-awaitedWA2020 Conference that will be held at the Singapore Expo Convention and Exhibition Centre from 5-8 Dec 2021.
