World Aquaculture - December 2022

58 DECEMBER 2022 • WORLD AQUACULTURE • WWW.WA S .ORG Post-Certification Role of Associations This article describes the role that NAIA played in certification orientation and audit preparedness (Side Bar 2) but associations can also play important roles in postcertification support. Until today, NAIA provides technical support in certification and auditing to its members. Because NAIA is a member of the Technical Committee on Organic Aquaculture, where we represent the interests of NAIA’s farmers, we are able to inform our members on changes to the standard following technical reviews. We also flag organic program modifications, such as when the organic standard became legislated, giving our growers access to the Canadian Organic Regime and the associated Canadian Organic logo. When this happened, NAIA also led the process of identifying a CB that was accredited to audit to the legislated standard and facilitated the process of switching all companies over to this CB. We continue to liaise with CBs to ensure their programs provide the best value for NAIA’s members. In addition, we often help with standard interpretation and technical advice, including product label changes and suggestions for close-out of audit non-compliances. From those first enquiries about certifying blue mussels as organic and led by our strategic priorities around industry certification preparedness, the NAIA Certification Benchmarking Project was successful in providing NAIA member companies with technical assistance around certification. The program was partially responsible for several world-firsts in certification and is still serving our members with practical advice and support ten years after it was initiated. Postscript The Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association represents the interests of all commercial aquaculture companies in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, as well as their suppliers and service providers. Our farming member companies produce salmon, trout, mussels and oysters. Notes Darrell Green (dgreen@naia.ca) is the Research and Development Coordinator for the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association. He has worked in the aquaculture industry since 1997. He has management experience in commercial aquaculture and has worked on aquaculture research projects involving cod, halibut and blue mussels at Memorial University. In his current capacity at NAIA, he plans, initiates and manages NAIA R&D projects on behalf of and in partnership with NAIA member aquaculture companies. Darrell currently sits on the CGSB Canadian Technical Committee on Organic Aquaculture and is a member of the Board of Directors (Past President) of the Canadian Organic Seafood Association. 13.
