Robins McIntosh, Executive Vice President of Charoen Pokphand Foods PLC, will speak about “Charoen Pokphand Foods – Changing the Face of Asian Aquaculture.” Robins McIntosh is an executive vice president of the Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CPF), the largest integrated producer of aquaculture shrimp in the world. His responsibilities include management of the shrimp broodstock development and genetics programs. He joined CPF in 2001 and was tasked with the job of reviving the companies shrimp aquaculture division. As part of this process he oversaw the introduction of P. vannamei into Thailand, the development of SPF P. monodon, and the modernization of hatcheries, and farms. His work at CPF increased shrimp production at the company from 5,000 t to over 90,000 t annually in 2010. These changes that were introduced into CPF eventually made their way into most of Asian shrimp culture, turning a stagnant industry into one of the most dynamic growth stories ever in aquaculture. Prior to his work at CPF Mr. McIntosh developed and was general manager of Belize Aquaculture Ltd: a farm credited with revolutionizing the way in which shrimp can be grown with minimal water exchange and high efficiency. He graduated with a BA from Vanderbilt University, and a MA from the University of South Florida. Øyvind Oaland, Global Director, R&D and Technical, Marine Harvest ASA, will speak about “Technological Innovation in Salmon Farming,” and how Marine Harvest is addressing current challenges and how technological innovations and new production platforms will facilitate sustainable growth. Øyvind Oaland has served as head of the Global Research and Development department in Marine Harvest since 2008 and is member of the senior management team in Marine Harvest Group. He has long experience from research and technical area within salmon farming and processing and has been with Marine Harvest since 2000. Prior to taking the position as Global Director Research & Development in 2008, he held various positions within the group in the areas of fish health, food safety Planning Updates for Conferences in Montpellier and Bogotá and product quality. Øyvind has a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science. Press Conference at AQUA 2018 The FAO Fisheries & Aquaculture Department, the European Commission and the AQUA2018 conference organizers will hold the AQUA2018 Press Conference at 1800 h on August 27, 2018 at Le Corum, Montpellier, France with the following speakers: • Dr. Árni Mathiesen, Assistant Director General, FAO Fisheries & Aquaculture Department, • Mr. Karmenu Vella, EU Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, • High-level representatives from a number of leading aquaculture countries such as China, Norway, Thailand, Ecuador and Africa. During the follow-up reception selected aquaculture products prepared by chef Jacques Pourcel can be tasted and journalists will be able to meet with key stakeholders. Technical Excursions at AQUA 2018 Two technical excursions or farm tours are offered to AQUA 2018 participants. The first, prior to the event on Saturday August 25 will visit the IFREMER research station at Palavas (sea bass and algae culture) and then the “Poissons du Soleil” sea bass, sea bream and meagre hatchery, the oldest private fish hatchery on the Mediterranean Sea. The tour will depart from Le Corum Congress Centre at 0800 h and return at 1630 h. The tour is limited to 50 people and the cost is US$ 75, which includes lunch. The second tour, on Thursday August 30 just after AQUA 2018 will visit oyster farms at the famous Etang de Thau. The Thau lagoon is the biggest and the deepest lagoon of the French Mediterranean, providing 10 percent of the total French Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas production. The tour will depart from Le Corum Congress Centre at 0900 h and return at 1500 h. The tour is limited to 100 people and the cost is US$ 100 and includes farm visits by boat and oyster tasting.
