As the world population continues to expand and the standard of living improves there is an ever-increasing need for dietary protein. Given the nutritional value of seafood and the ability of aquaculture to efficiently convert feedstuff into higher valued products, aquaculture is part of the food solution. Like other feed-based animal production systems, the production of shrimp follows a similar trend of other animal production industries. We are systematically improving our knowledge of nutritional requirements, working animal proteins out of feed formulations, improving culture practices, taking advantage of genetic improvements and vertically integrating to improve efficiencies. Given, feed represents the largest variable cost in production, there is a clear need to shift our feeds to ingredients that are economical, have production that is expected to increase with demand, are nutritious, and can be used across a range of species. Products produced from soybeans meet these criteria and its availability is orders of magnitude larger than all other plant-based protein sources. Given the importance of soy-based products, this presentation will provide information on the use of range of soy-based ingredients and provide recent examples of the use of soy based proteins in shrimp feeds.
