CULTIVATING THE NEXT GENERATION: BUILDING A MULTIDISCIPLINARY WORKFORCE PIPELINE FOR U.S. AQUACULTURE AND FISHERIES

Imani Black: NACE 2026 Social Dimensions session

The future of U.S. aquaculture and fisheries depends not only on technological progress but also on the social dimensions that shape who participates in, benefits from, and sustains the industry. Building a strong community of practice is central to creating a viable workforce pipeline that supports seafood production and innovation.

Since 2020, Minorities In Aquaculture (MIA) has been committed to connecting people with meaningful pathways into aquaculture, maritime, and fisheries careers. Through mentorship, training, and cross-sector collaboration, MIA has demonstrated how cultivating networks of support strengthens both individual success and industry resilience. By linking education, workforce readiness, and community impact, MIA advances a model of practice that empowers people across hatcheries, farms, processing, research, and policy.

This session will explore how MIA’s community-driven approach to workforce development contributes to a more competitive and sustainable U.S. seafood sector. By emphasizing people as the foundation of innovation, the presentation highlights how investing in human capital builds stronger communities of practice and ensures aquaculture’s role in a resilient food future.
