The Alaska Mariculture Research and Training Center (AMRTC) was developed by the Alaska Mariculture Task Force in 2018 as a partner organization to the Alaska Mariculture Alliance (AMA). The vision at that time was for AMRTC to strengthen the application of science and support training to further sustainable growth of shellfish and seaweed farming in the state. The AMRTC was not envisioned as a brick and mortar center, but rather as a coordinating body that could build partnerships and leverage resources to facilitate and coordinate training, research and outreach for better success of industry and community development. Alaska Sea Grant volunteered to launch AMRTC in 2021 and staffed the program with funding from the National Sea Grant College Program in 2022, and with later funding from the state of Alaska and from the U.S. Economic Development Administration through the Alaska Mariculture Cluster. Since its early development and to the present day, AMRTC has focused on a few main objectives. 1) Facilitate communication among industry, researchers, and management. 2) Support industry expansion and technology transfer. 3) Engage and communicate research results to the industry and public. With these priorities leading the way, AMRTC has become a known and valued partner supporting Alaska’s mariculture industry. On a state level, AMRTC facilitates workshops and trainings in different regions throughout the state and hosts a knowledge exchange program allowing Alaskan farmers to exchange ideas with other farmers within the US and beyond. On a broader level, the center disseminates research highlights, funding opportunities, and training resources as well as uplifts the current industry through outreach events, website development, monthly newsletters, and social media. AMRTC is bridging research and industry needs, and showcases opportunities for farmers, managers, and partners to engage in shaping Alaska’s mariculture future. Looking to the future, AMRTC will continue to strengthen applied research partnerships to address pressing industry questions, and expand workforce development pathways through internships and advanced training programs. By advancing these priorities, AMRTC will continue to amplify Alaska’s mariculture industry, ensuring its growth is sustainable, community-driven, and competitive on a global scale.
