The College of the Florida Keys has a robust marine aquaculture program at the Southernmost Marine Aquaculture Research and Training (SMART) Center and an innovative and pioneering renewable energy technician training program that focuses on wind, solar, and hydrokinetic power education and research. Working with students, faculty, and industry partners, the Office of Science & Research (OSR) developed the Neptune Rising project, which is a futuristic concept that employs an offshore integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) design powered by a variety of marine renewable energy technologies. The Neptune Rising project won national recognition and was awarded the “Moonshot” award by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) during the 2020 Marine Energy Collegiate Competition (MECC).
