Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) provides degrees in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) and Algae Cultivation. Using aquaponics, hydroponics and algae photobioreactors, SFCC-CEA is tasked to train the workforce of the future in these fields. Federal and state grants have helped us develop a state-of-the-art facility focusing on critical food, energy and water issues that are important for producers in the arid southwest United States. State grants have helped us build and maintain a 1,000m2 production greenhouse where aquaponic and hydroponic systems operate year-round at semi-commercial scale. This past year USDA grants from NIFA and NSF have funded collaborative projects with regional universities and scholarships for students hoping to land a fisheries job. Much of our grant work involves educating high school students and teachers, creating a pipeline of students entering the SFCC-CEA program. This talk will provide an update on grant developments over the past year.
