This presentation will deliver a comprehensive overview of recent initiatives undertaken by the Australian Sustainable Seaweed Alliance (ASSA) to advance the national seaweed industry. Specifically, it will summarise the key findings from 12 recently completed research and development projects that address critical areas such as hatchery and seedstock production, biorefinery innovations, new product development, and methodologies for demonstrating environmental benefits. Additionally, it will discuss an online framework designed to strengthen regulation and education within the sector. The presentation will further identify key challenges and obstacles facing seaweed aquaculture in Australia and explore global collaboration opportunities.

The significance of effective governance and dynamic market development is underscored as essential on an international level. However, persistent constraints—including limited political and financial backing, inadequate resources, and sector-wide cohesion challenges—continue to impede progress. Strategic interregional collaboration is therefore recommended to drive significant advancements and enhance cost efficiencies and innovation across the sector.
