Post disaster food security is when food is provided after an event that significantly reduces local food supplies. For example, hurricanes, pandemics, oil spills, war, earthquakes and more. A 2025 paper from New Zealand (Yanxin et al, 2025) makes the argument that it is possible to apply urban agriculture to enhance the sources of post disaster food. This paper explores if how and what types of systems and what types of infrastructure would be necessary for Aquaponics to be a viable source of post disaster and perhaps long-term urban food supplies within the United States.
