My name is Alexander Cossel from Frankfort, Kentucky. I am a senior at Frankfort High School. Emmanuel Annang, international graduate student (from Ghana) at Kentucky State University (KSU) provides individual training and educational opportunities to me, his mentee, in my role as an Extension intern. One thing that has always interested me is aquatic animals. Due to this passion, I intend to pursue a Bachelor degree in Biology, and Master degree in Marine Biology. I decided to take advantage of the work-based learning opportunity offered by my school for students in their senior year. I chose KSU’s Aquaculture Research Center for my internship because they offer one of the best aquaculture programs. So far, I have been engaged in work and educational activities. This includes feeding of shrimp with different types of feeds and siphoning their feces (Figure 1). I am gaining understanding of recirculating aquaculture systems. I have learnt how aerators are used to provide oxygen to fish in their systems. I have learnt about the importance of water quality. I am being trained on the process of backwashing and feeding mixed-sex Tilapia that are being raised as broodstock for an on-farm demonstration Extension project (Figure 2). I have done on-line research on Largemouth Bass. Learning and participating in all these activities has given me a better idea of what research is all about, increased my confidence level, and helped me come up with ideas to look into what I could be doing in marine biology. I have been enjoying my internship so far and look forward to participate in Nile tilapia spawning to produce Genetically Male Tilapia as part of KSU’s Tilapia Capacity Building Extension Project.
