Although aquaponics is often associated with plant production, its technologies offer solutions to persistent aquaculture challenges such as nutrient buildup and water quality management. At AGP Substrates, we have developed a biodegradable, nature-based iron gel that supplements iron for plants while stabilizing water chemistry between plants and fish.
Our nutrient delivery method is more efficient and direct than conventional powdered fertilizers, keeping micronutrients biologically available for longer and reducing the need for synthetic inputs. When integrated into recirculating systems, the AGP gel supports plant productivity and enhances nitrogen removal without compromising fish health or increasing discharge.
Beyond its material performance, this work illustrates how aquaponic principles can strengthen aquaculture. By converting waste nutrients into a resource, we can build more resilient, efficient, and environmentally responsible systems. Our goal is to inspire recirculating aquaculture operators to see aquaponics not as a separate field, but as a natural evolution of water treatment — turning byproducts into value and advancing sustainable food production.
