While U.S. coastal waters have been characterized as offering ample space for offshore aquaculture, development has been impeded by low investor confidence, permitting challenges, and competition from seafood imports. Currently, only one offshore finfish aquaculture farm operates in open-ocean waters. To build investor confidence and support future industry growth, NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) is working at local and regional scales to develop coastal ocean intelligence that enables managers and industry stakeholders to make informed decisions. NCCOS’s marine spatial suitability models, aquaculture atlases, web applications, and planning portal provide a suite of frontline tools to support both early-stage industry planning and later-stage environmental review. In addition, NCCOS is advancing specialized tools such as an entanglement simulator and interactive scenario-planning models. This presentation will highlight the NCCOS aquaculture toolbox of science and services designed to facilitate the growth of aquaculture in the U.S.
