Dr Luis Fernando Aranguren Caro received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in the Aquaculture Pathology Laboratory, OIE’s Reference Laboratory for diagnosis of crustacean diseases, under the supervision of Dr. Donald Lightner a worldwide-recognized expert in this field. Dr Aranguren has over 20 years professional experience, working mainly on aquatic animal health, including shrimp and fish diseases, Histopathology diagnostics, Wet mounts analysis, health management, sanitary legislation and biosecurity.

Dr. Aranguren has collaborative projects with international organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). He is a frequent consultant to the shrimp farming industry and shrimp feed companies. Dr. Aranguren led the Importation Risk Analysis (IRA) for introduction of Penaeuis vannamei and P. monodon into the Sultanate of Oman and set up the set up the Quarantine strategy for importation and movement of new shrimp population. He has worked as Biosecurity Consultant for the Ministry of Agriculture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for five years and set up KSA’s biosecurity strategy for the shrimp industry that included the diagnostic laboratories. He was Director of Animal Health in the Colombian Aquaculture Research Center CENIACUA for over eight years. Currently, He is a Research Scientist of the Aquaculture Pathology Laboratory at University of Arizona, OIE Reference laboratory for WSSV, IHHNV, AHPND, TSV and NHP. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE, Paris, France) designated Dr Aranguren as an Expertise of Hepatobacter penaei (NHP).
