The Freshwater Fisheries Specialist will provide technical leadership for freshwater fisheries and biodiversity programs and projects at The Nature Conservancy, with an emphasis on the Amazon Basin. The Freshwater Fisheries Specialist will be part of Freshwater Program and They will report to the Peru Freshwater Coordinator and collaborate with global, regional, and national program staff, as well as the Peru Ocean Program to support community-based freshwater fisheries, aquatic biodiversity assessments, freshwater fisheries management, and monitoring and reporting.

Candidates with a strong quantitative background in freshwater fisheries science, freshwater fish ecology, or socioecological dimensions of freshwater fisheries in the Amazon region are encouraged to apply.

Type of contract: Two-year fixed-term contract.

We’re Looking For You

Reporting to the Peru Freshwater Coordinator, the Freshwater Fisheries Specialist oversees the development and implementation of TNC’s Freshwater projects advancing TNCs freshwater agenda by providing technical and management support and implement effective and impactful strategies to advance Peru Business Unit (BU) strategic plan and the Latin America Region’s (LAR) Humboldt and Andean Amazon Iconic Landscapes strategy.

The Freshwater Fisheries Specialist position offers a unique opportunity to advance the conservation and sustainable use of freshwater fish and biodiversity in Peru and the Amazon Basin. You will join an international conservation NGO to connect theory with practice and address the needs of people and nature.

Responsibilities And Scope
 

  • Oversee continued implementation of fisheries, aquaculture, and other freshwater-related projects, as well as the associated monitoring and evaluation framework. Monitor project progress throughout its lifecycle and proactively and regularly alert the program coordinator of any obstacles or delays in activities or deliverables.
  • Manage risks, resolve issues and conflicts, and collaboratively resolve complex problems using project management methodologies and processes, ensuring compliance with all organizational standards.
  • Serve as a technical resource on Peru's sociopolitical landscape regarding freshwater fisheries.
  • Provide technical information and guidance related to project development, collaborative agreements, national policy support, technical capacity requirements, etc., based on analysis, experience, and context.
  • Apply a diverse knowledge of freshwater fisheries practices and tools to a wide variety of tasks, including, but not limited to, strategy development, project coordination, and management.
  • Engage with key stakeholders, such as Indigenous Peoples and local communities, government, NGO conservation partners, the scientific community, and the private sector.
  • Lead resource mobilization and assist in writing grant proposals to secure funding for research and conservation projects.
  • Support the scientific community in conducting site visits and preparing scientific reports, publications, and presentations to communicate research findings to diverse audiences.
  • Develop, work with, and/or manage the budget to complete freshwater-related activities/projects, negotiate and contract with vendors, and monitor consumption rates.
  • Oversee data management, manage reporting processes, and develop content/reports to meet reporting requirements and other communication needs, including TNC internal reports, donor reports, impact reports, and other ad hoc requests.
  • Organize and develop workshops, meetings, or consultations necessary to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ensure program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
  • Under minimal supervision, makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and professional judgment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally to conferences, workshops, symposia, and other fisheries-related meetings, including nights and weekends, ensuring alignment with program objectives.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, in remote locations, at sea or in difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • It is recommended that this position be based in the Ucayali or Loreto regions. Immigration or relocation assistance is not offered for this position.

Requirements

What You’ll Bring
 

  • BA/BS degree in Biology, Fisheries Science or similar field and 5 years’ experience in natural resource management or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.
  • Experience developing and implementing training workshops.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
     

Desired Qualifications
 

  • 5-7 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working at Amazon in fisheries or fish ecology
  • Multi-cultural and cross-cultural experience with indigenous people appreciated.
  • Experience in developing and implementing fishing agreements or fisheries conservation plans.
  • Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives or related field
  • Knowledge of fisheries regulations and agencies, public policies, laws, and guidelines to assess, contribute to, and adapt TNC’s strategy to the circumstances
  • Analytical skills, including analysis and manipulation of freshwater fisheries and/or biodiversity data
  • Project management experience, elaboration of Terms of Reference, hiring and management of contracts
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently and with little advance planning, sometimes on weekends
  • Strong knowledge of common software applications, including GIS and statistical packages
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management, and natural resource preservation.
  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
