Professor/Associate Professor in Production Biology

The position is part of a strategic focus on aquaculture at the Faculty of Fisheries and Aquaculture/NFH and will be added to the research group Aquaculture and Environment .

 The position is expected to contribute actively to increasing the scope of research on relevant issues within production biology, primarily with a focus on fish welfare and fish needs, at the intersection of biology and technology/aquatic environment. The position will be involved in the group's other activities related to aquaculture, especially in relation to feed, nutrition, reproduction, fry biology and RAS biology, with a focus on challenges in the Norwegian aquaculture industry. The research group for Aquaculture and the Environment is part of a broader research environment at NFH and BFE, and collaboration across research groups, departments and institutions is encouraged.

The position will be responsible for teaching in aquaculture-related subjects, as well as supervision at master's and doctoral levels. We emphasize collegial collaboration regarding the planning, implementation and further development of our study programs.

 The positions are also expected to contribute to communication and dissemination of their field of expertise, both internally at UIT and to industry and society at large.

Requirements

The position requires

  • doctorate in the field or, or competence at an equivalent level documented by scientific work of the same scope and quality
  • documented basic educational competence (read more below)
  • that relevant applicants are internationally recognized within their field, with scientific qualifications beyond doctoral level 
  • documented expertise in biology and fish welfare related to fish production and farming 
  • good knowledge of the aquaculture industry and documented ability to obtain external funding for research
  • personal qualities that make you ambitious, that you communicate and collaborate well
  • good written and oral presentation skills in English ( read how ), and that non-Scandinavian applicants must be willing to learn Norwegian at B2 level within 3 years ( read more - UiT will facilitate the implementation of a Norwegian course)

It will be considered an advantage if you also have competence in Norwegian or a Scandinavian language. 

The position of professor also requires:

  • Doctorate in the field, or competence at an equivalent level documented by scientific work of the same scope and quality
  • Significant contributions to research at the highest level, in accordance with established international or national standards in the field. To be awarded professorial competence, you must be able to document significantly more extensive, high-quality research than is required for a doctorate. You should document high-level academic activity over the past six years, and that this points towards continued activity at professorial level in the future. UiT also follows national guidelines adopted by the National Faculty Meeting for the relevant field when assessing professorial competence. The guidelines can be found  here. Requirements for competence in, among other things, are put forward 
    • academic management and administration
    • dissemination, innovation and interaction with society
  • Documented teaching competence at professor level (read more below). 

All applicants for teaching and research positions must document their educational expertise in their application. You must have acquired basic competence for teaching and supervision at university and college level. This entails basic skills in planning, implementing, evaluating and developing teaching and supervision.  

Basic competence is documented by the following: 

  • a) Applicants who have completed their own university pedagogical course equivalent to 200 hours must attach course/exam certificates and a study plan. 
  • b) Other applicants must describe, assess and document their competence as a teacher and supervisor through a systematic and comprehensive presentation. The skills must be documented in the form of a pedagogical portfolio. 

Those who do not meet the basic educational competence requirements upon employment will be required to meet these requirements within two years. Applicants for professor positions are also required to:   

  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience in higher education in a full-time position, as well as a requirement for experience from supervision, preferably at PhD level, but also at Master's level. 
  • Quality development in one's own teaching over time.
  • Broad experience with supervision, preferably at master's/PhD level.
  • Participation in the development of educational quality in professional communities.
