The Coastal Ecology and Seagrass Biology Lab in the School of Ocean Science and Engineering at The University of Southern Mississippi seeks a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in seagrass biology and ecology for studies to on seagrass reproductive ecology and physiology. Individuals with experience in seagrass ecosystems, and interest or experience in plant reproduction, are encouraged to apply.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Engage in a project studying seagrass reproductive ecology and physiology to inform conservation and restoration.
  2. Develop expertise in seagrass biology and ecology and contribute new knowledge and ideas to this area of research.
  3. Participate in planning and executing field work in nearshore seagrass ecosystems in the Gulf.
  4. Contribute to written and oral communication, including the development of peer-reviewed manuscripts as lead author, reports, website content, and public outreach products.
  5. Participate in student mentoring, and perform other duties as assigned by the study PI.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree from an accredited university or college in coastal or marine sciences, biology, ecology, or a related discipline.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 
  • Organized, self-motivated, and able to work with a team to execute goals and objectives.
  • Values and respects the perspectives and experiences of others.
  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with standard laboratory techniques.
  • Experience working on small boats and in shallow, nearshore ecosystems.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to contribute to and lead development of reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and outreach activities.
  • Ability to participate in fieldwork.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience driving small boats.
