Job Details
- Perform routine tasks at the GMSC, including daily animal health checks and feedings.
- Perform duties relevant to the maintenance of zebrafish lines being cultivated for classroom activities and research. Provide logistical support for the transport of live animals to classroom and lab settings as needed. Collaborate with ZERF Manager to track nursery viability for these activities as needed.
- Perform routine water quality parameter analysis and review for abnormal readings that indicate potential issues at the GMSC.
- Support all GMSC facility sanitation protocols, including tank cleaning, organization of aquaculture components, cleaning and calibrating water quality probes and sensors, and changing system filters.
- Handle basic needs for GMSC facility operation during weekends and holidays as needed. Also provide support for ongoing ZERF projects in the absence of student-led research teams due to school breaks and holidays.
- Collaborate with MSC research teams to ensure feed schedules are executed and recorded per species specifications and needs.
- Assist with the monitoring of critical systems at the MSC for potential issues and ensure proper reporting mechanisms are in place.
- Provide training support and monitoring for new students joining research projects at the MSC to ensure proper and consistent animal care.
- Work closely with the GSMC Vivarium Manager and ZERF Manager to mitigate and resolve issues with facility operations at the GMSC and ZERF.
- Other duties may be required as necessary.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in biology, aquaculture, marine biology, biochemistry, genetics, or a related scientific field is preferred.
- Relevant experience in fish biology or aquatic animal husbandry, gained through academic training or professional employment, is strongly preferred.
- Prior experience working in aquatics settings is also preferred.
- The position requires a high level of mobility and the ability to lift and move containers weighing up to 30 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must demonstrate the ability to work independently and show initiative.
