Coral Restoration Technician, Hawaii Island

Job Details

The Coral Restoration Technician performs and participates in coral restoration operations including the maintenance, management, development and coordination of restoration programs. The Coral Restoration Technician (CRT) leads and participates in work teams to ensure the coordination, community support and implementation of restoration plans. The CRT implements restoration activities, collects and manages data, maintains supplies and equipment, and coordinates fieldwork with TNC staff, volunteers, partners, and communities. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, with hazardous materials and under physically demanding circumstances. This position is located in West Hawai‘i, Hawai‘i Island. This is a fixed-term position through September 30, 2027. (Possibility of extension is based on future funding availability.)

Requirements

What You’ll Bring:

  • AA/AS degree in marine science-related field and 5-year related experience in coral reef conservation, science, restoration, marine fieldwork or similar field (or equivalent combination of education and experience, such as BA/BS and 3 years of experience, etc.).

  • Experience working underwater on SCUBA

  • Experience working from small vessels

  • Experience with reef systems.

  • Experience in marine monitoring, research, ecology, and/or management principles.

  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Scientific diving credentials from an AAUS institution.  

  • Experience operating small vessels. 

  • Experience with structure-from-motion photogrammetry data collection, processing software, and analysis.  

  • Experience with GIS processing and analysis 

  • Experience communicating and engage effectively with local community partners and other stakeholder groups in Hawai‘i. 

  • Some experience managing volunteers or entry level staff. 

  • Ability to recognize and identify Hawaiian coral species, health conditions, and diseases to complete coral restoration activities.  

  • Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in reef restoration in Hawai‘i.  

Salary Information:

The starting annual salary for this position is within the range of $61,300 – $64,980. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA and is based out of the Kailua-Kona TNC office. Where a successful candidate’s pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including location, qualifications, skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
