The Manager, Mangrove Fish Research is a full-time position that leads a team monitoring prey base fish populations in the mangrove zone of Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and the Florida Keys. Scientific responsibilities will primarily consist of designing research and surveys, collecting prey base fish populations in the mangrove habitat, maintaining data accuracy in databases as well as physical data. This supervisory role also includes managing a small team including scheduling, prioritizing project tasks, training/coaching staff, ensuring safe practices, and process execution. Fish populations are monitored using a 3m2 drop system, throw traps, and seines. Field data will be collected from, powerboats, rowboats, canoes and kayaks. This role consists of fieldwork and work done in the office at the Everglades Science Center.

Essential Functions

• Oversee and carry out routine fish sampling at established sites.

• Hire, train, mentor, and supervise full-time staff members and seasonal staff.

• Successfully oversee the monitoring of prey base fish populations in the mangrove zone of Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and the Florida Keys.

• Responsible for management of large databases consisting of biologic data; managing a team to enter and quality check data for errors.

• Responsible for the highest quality data and will conduct final quality checks and editing of raw data through analysis. Maintain and analyze database information.

• Ensuring accuracy and timeliness in data processing and analysis.

• Work to collect, identify, preserve, and catalogue fish and macroinvertebrates, and help structure collections for aquatic vegetation.

• Prepare and maintain detailed records, log, and summarize reports of all procedures and results including graphs, scientific calculations, and statistical analysis charting to assist in the preparation of annual data for clients.

• Collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team of biologists and research associates with all ESC research projects. Including assisting with other ESC research projects.

• Operate and trailer boats to and from field sites throughout the Everglades and Florida Bay.

• Responsible for the maintenance of vehicles, boats and all assigned field gear.

• Participate in group projects to maintain the base facility and improve operations.

• Maintains and fosters culture of safety.

• Other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field required.

• Minimum 5 years’ experience working in marine, estuarine, or wetlands ecology environments. Will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience in Florida’s estuaries, mangrove forests and/or coastal wetlands, sampling and identification of fishes is highly desired.

• Computer experience and familiarity with spreadsheet, statistical analyses and database management programs are required.

• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that can be adapted to reach a wide range of individuals and used to build consensus.  Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Physical requirements include the ability to work long hours in the field in sub-tropical wetland environments with or without accommodation, exposed to the harsh South Florida environment (extreme heat, biting insects, wading in water or mud), sometimes alone and without a communications signal while adhering to safety techniques detailed in the Audubon Safety Manual.  Ability to swim, and lift 40+lbs with or without accommodation.

• Ability and willingness to work in murky waters that serve as the home for potentially dangerous wildlife such as alligators and venomous snakes.

• Must have operating experience with small boats, kayaks, and other vehicles.

• Ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment such as trucks and boats (e.g. jump start a vehicle or change a flat tire).

• Willingness to occasionally work on weekends.

• Valid driver’s license required.
