Job Details
FSUCML seeks an OPS Shellfish Research Hatchery Technician to assist in the breeding, rearing, and maintenance of shellfish species such as oysters, clams, and scallops for research, restoration, and aquaculture purposes. This position reports directly to the Hatchery Manager.
Responsibilities
Shellfish Culture
- Work independently across all hatchery phases: algae culture, broodstock conditioning, spawning, larval rearing, settlement, microseed, and nursery.
- Apply disinfection protocols and maintain strict hygiene standards in all hatchery zones.
- Follow and help revise standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Carry out basic laboratory work including sample prep, microscope use, and sterile techniques.
Water Quality
- Understand water flow, filtration, and aquaculture treatment systems.
- Monitor environmental parameters and adjust systems as needed.
- Build, repair, and optimize water delivery systems.
- Ensure compliance with quality management protocols.
- Support implementation of improvements based on quality trends.
Data
- Record data and help manage hatchery databases.
- Maintain organized records for production, inventory, and experiments.
Maintenance
- Help clean and maintain hatchery equipment and infrastructure.
- Oversee the proper functioning of systems (e.g., air, water, lighting, sensors).
- Ensure equipment calibration and readiness for routine or experimental use.
Troubleshooting
- Quickly identify and resolve biological, mechanical, or operational issues.
- Provide input and propose solutions to optimize hatchery productivity and efficiency.
- Adapt to challenges and evolve research priorities with initiative and autonomy.
Outreach
- Give facility tours to visiting researchers, students, and external partners.
- Communicate hatchery activities to collaborators, students, and institutions.
Requirements
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)
