Technical Staff Member - Aquaculture

Büsum Full Time

Job Details

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Individualized and Cell-Based Medical Technology IMTE, we are shaping the future of aquaculture – from fish nutrition and husbandry to fish health and welfare, and experimental aquaculture systems. Our open, diverse, and inclusive research culture fosters innovation by incorporating different perspectives and experiences. Our modern RAS infrastructure – from large-scale to small-scale recirculation systems and modules for North Sea shrimp – enables robust experiments and the transferability to semi-industrial scale . In this way, we develop sustainable feeds, improve animal welfare and husbandry methods , and translate findings directly into practical applications.

As a technician, you ensure the smooth operation of our aquaculture facilities and experimental installations, thereby supporting research and animal husbandry:

  • You will reliably coordinate the operation and maintenance of our aquaculture facilities – from individual circuits to large systems and aquarium modules – and ensure stable experimental conditions.

  • In research projects and experimental setups, you implement technical requirements, support the scientific team in planning, and ensure the smooth running of the experiments through your expertise.

  • You will prepare, technically support, and carefully document your experiments to ensure data remains traceable and projects progress efficiently.

  • Your tasks also include the maintenance of technical systems (pumps, filters, sensors/MSR) and the pragmatic resolution of malfunctions to ensure that our systems run reliably.

  • They care for and keep aquatic organisms in our experimental facilities and observe them carefully to ensure animal health and welfare.

  • Furthermore, they optimize technical components, housing systems and feeding concepts in order to continuously improve processes and transfer findings to a semi-industrial scale.

  • By being on call (≤ 30 min response time) and working weekend shifts in a team rotation, you ensure the animals are cared for around the clock.
  • Furthermore, you will provide support with occupational safety and training to ensure that everyone works safely and new colleagues are quickly ready to start.

Requirements

What you bring

  • Completed technical or craft training (e.g. electrician, plumbing, heating and air conditioning technician, water supply technician) or comparable
  • Initial experience in handling technical systems (e.g., RAS systems, aquarium technology, sewage treatment technology, swimming pool technology, water supply technology, etc.)
  • Willingness to learn about animal care and the keeping of aquatic organisms
  • Interest in the technical support of RAS systems, large aquarium systems or similar systems.
  • A strong understanding and interest on both a technical and biological level
  • German language skills at least at level B2 (independent language use)

What would be desirable:

  • You are a dedicated individual, possess an independent, responsible and conscientious work ethic, and have experience using Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, SAP) as well as entering and maintaining data.
