Assistant engineer in geo-natural and anthropized environmental studies

Rennes, Brittany, France Full Time

Job Details

You will be working within the experimental unit for aquatic ecology and ecotoxicology (U3E) based in Rennes and composed of about forty people.

Within the INRAE research infrastructure dedicated to the study of living organisms in continental aquatic environments (IR LIFE), the experimental unit of aquatic ecology and ecotoxicology (U3E) is in charge of managing several observation, experimentation and collection devices enabling the monitoring of aquatic ecosystems and the populations that live there in natural environments (observatory) and in controlled environments (experimentation).

In particular, the U3E manages and operates the Colisa Biological Resource Center for Fish Samples (CRB Colisa). The history of this collection, spanning several decades, allows researchers to trace the evolution of these populations over time and to generate knowledge for the management, conservation, and exploitation of these species. This CRB comprises more than 450,000 samples that record life history traits of fish (age, migration, size, reproduction, habitat), carrying DNA and various chemical elements. Colisa is one of the CRBs of the Agronomic Resources for Research (RARe) Research Institute.

The entire project is part of the OFB, INRAE, Institut Agro, and UPPA research and development cluster on migratory fish in their environments (MIAME R&D Cluster). This cluster is affiliated with U3E. The MIAME Cluster is, among other things, responsible at the national level for monitoring amphidromous species (eels, salmon, sea trout) within the framework of the Data Collection Framework (DCF), a European regulation that governs the collection, management, and provision of data to the various scientific groups that provide advice on the status of fish stocks. Within this framework, data from scientific monitoring, as well as data from fishing declarations by professionals (at sea and in rivers) and recreational fishers (in rivers), must be provided to the various national and international expert groups each year.

The National Center for the Interpretation of Migratory Salmonid Catches (CNICS), managed by the U3E within the MIAME cluster, monitors salmon and sea trout catches in fisheries and manages and provides data to various scientific groups that advise on the status of fish stocks. In this context, data must be provided to the authority responsible for managing fishing quotas and to various national and international expert groups. All the collected data has long been widely used by INRAE scientists and their partners.

In this context, your responsibilities will include:

  1. Follow the CNICS declarations of salmon catches (mandatory) and sea trout catches (voluntary for recreational fishing)
  2. Perform routine secretarial tasks: receiving and sending letters and emails, answering the phone and processing requests related to the CNICS.
  3. Facilitate the collection of samples and data for the various collection projects within the MIAME cluster (defining protocols, regulatory monitoring, follow-up, etc.)
  4. Ensure the banking of samples and data from CNICS and other collection projects
  5. Preparing samples (scalometric and genetic)
  6. Assisting with sample analysis (scalimetry)
  7. Transmit the results from these samplings to the various stakeholders (report writing, data provision, etc.)

Requirements

- Strong interpersonal and listening skills. The projects to be carried out require contact with numerous stakeholders and actors involved in the management of amphidromous populations.

- Proficiency in computer tools: office software and ideally practical experience with databases

- Writing skills, scientific curiosity, rigor, autonomy, ability to synthesize and analyze.

Knowledge of aquatic or marine biology would be an asset.
