Intermediate Environmental Specialist – Fisheries and Aquatics

Hatfield Consultants is seeking an Intermediate Environmental Specialist – Fisheries and Aquatics to become part of our Environmental Monitoring and Assessment team. This position can be located in Calgary, North Vancouver or New Westminster, BC. The ideal candidate will provide technical and administrative support to the environmental assessment, permitting, and monitoring of natural resource projects in British Columbia, Alberta, and northern Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and implement aquatic impact assessments and environmental effects monitoring programs, including study design, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Participate in field programs, as required, to conduct and direct technical aspects of environmental monitoring and assessments of aquatic habitats.
  • Collaborate with teams to conduct environmental baseline surveys and impact assessment studies in conformance with local, provincial, and federal regulations.
  • Undertake project scheduling and budget management activities (development and tracking of budgets).
  • Prepare project-related technical reports and presentations.
  • Provide technical guidance to clients on environmental assessment, permitting, and monitoring.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in a relevant environmental discipline (fisheries, aquatic ecology, environmental science) and a relevant professional designation in either BC or Alberta (or immediate eligibility).
  • Minimum four years of experience managing environmental studies focused on natural resource development and/or infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with federal and provincial (BC/Alberta) environmental regulatory and permitting frameworks.
  • Experience operating in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork, and an ability/interest to work in the field, occasionally in remote locations.
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, experience driving a pickup truck and the ability to meet the requirements for our third party automobile insurance policy.

  • Demonstrated technical competency and knowledge of freshwater and/or marine ecology.
  • Demonstrated reporting and project management skills.
  • Research and analytical skills (data collection, compilation, and analysis).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
