The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources, has one seasonal position (no benefits) available at the Wahweap State Fish Hatchery in Big Water, Utah. This appointment runs from Feb. 1 to Nov. 1, 2026 (start and end dates are flexible.

Eample of Duties

Assist in the daily operations of the Wahweap State Fish Hatchery. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Daily feeding and care of multiple warmwater fish species and western (boreal) toads
  • Daily monitoring of water chemistry and quality
  • Harvesting ponds using seines and dip nets
  • Stocking fish in waterbodies throughout Utah
  • Assisting in catfish spawning and conducting necropsies
  • Cleaning ponds and raceways
  • Maintaining buildings, grounds and ponds (including landscaping and general upkeep)
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Requirements

Job requirements and skills

  • Education: Background in biology or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates seeking or holding a BS degree in a related field.
  • Technical skills: Ability to collect and record scientific data; basic knowledge of aquatic biology/ecology; ability to identify various fish species.
  • Software: Proficiency in word processing and wildlife-specific computer automation programs.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Compliance: Ability to follow written/oral instructions and adhere to applicable laws, rules and safety policies.
  • Maintenance: Skills in the repair and maintenance of tools, equipment and facility operations.
