The Hatchery Technician will work directly with the Hatchery Manager & Lead Foreman to help plan, direct and actively contribute to the safe and efficient production of oyster seed for Hog Island nursery operations in Samoa, CA. In general, these operations will serve to ensure that Hog Island has the best quality oyster seed consistently and predictably. To be a good fit, you must have an eye for detail, a willingness to collaborate and strong communication skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Keep the hatchery bio-secure at all times by wearing Hatchery uniform, proper storage of uniform, cleaning hands with soap and alcohol, and assisting in preventing pets and other outside non-bio-secure sources from entering the hatchery.
  • Greet visitors with respect and assist them with bio-secure protocols before entering hatchery (Disinfectant foot bath, wash hands thoroughly)
  • Work with and report to the Hatchery Manager and/or Foreman on daily hatchery routines.
  • Assist with rinsing Seed in Upwellers and Downwellers daily to keep oysters clean, healthy and growing;
  • Screen oysters by hand or Sorting machine as needed;
  • Rinse broodstock daily. Assist crew with filling out appropriate logs for broodstock, and keeping oysters in specific groups;
  • Assist with maintaining and tracking inventories;
  • Aware of the process for data entry into databases regarding groups of broodstock, seed, larvae, and algae.
  • Safely operate valves, pumps, blowers, sanitizing equipment, and water quality reading equipment.
  • Clean tanks, silos, banjo screens, and filters to keep system bacteria free and flowing.
  • Help maintain pumps, blowers, and filters;
  • Help repair and make new silo, setting, and banjo screens as needed;
  • Communicate operational needs to the Hatchery Manager and/or Foreman that involve equipment, maintenance, water quality, and safety
  • Assist with the cleanliness and organization of hatchery and crew lunch room
  • Follow all Hatchery Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs);
  • Properly use and maintain water quality sampling and monitoring meters as well as microscopes and slides;
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. In addition, the individual must be punctual, have a good attendance record, and have reliable means of transportation to work.
 

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some overtime, holidays and/or weekends
  • First Aid and CPR Certified.
  • Comfortable working with cleaning and disinfecting chemicals daily
  • Knowledge of Marine biology and parameters that can affect the health of cultured product
  • Understand basic aquaculture and how to properly drain and clean cultured products
  • Knowledge of plumbing equipment (valves, tees, elbows, PVC glue) and ability to adjust rate of flow through pipes
  • Any experience in the culture of algae and/or oysters is a plus

  • Regularly stand and walk up to 8 hours per day
  • Regularly use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms
  • Regularly use sense of smell to detect health of cultures

  • Specific vision abilities required to do this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Repeatedly and safely lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds
