Vice President of Science and Impact

GSA is recruiting for a Vice President of Science and Impact to define the scope and direction of seafood industry solutions, inform standards development, and engage aquaculture and fisheries stakeholders to drive positive change.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Vice President of Science and Impact will have responsibility for the following:

  • Provide expert guidance on technical elements of projects and initiatives.
  • Identify mission-aligned grants, write grant applications, secure funding, and drive execution of grant funded projects, inclusive of measurable results.
  • Commission, conduct and/or lead mission-aligned research projects that advance responsible seafood.
  • Integrate research and technical expertise into GSA programs, standards, and projects, with consciousness of real-world program feasibility, affordability, and program sustainability.
  • Guide policy positions on key issues that impact and advance responsible seafood.
  • Represent GSA and forge relationships with external stakeholders to facilitate the implementation of GSA strategies and the adoption of GSA standards, programs, and solutions.
  • Convene stakeholders as necessary to advance the organization’s mission and vision.
  • Contribute to the growth of GSA’s impact with extensive focus on measurement and communications. 
  • Engage in industry events and establish strong relationships with marketplace endorsers, producers, associations, trade groups, and the scientific/technical community.
  • Financial management of budgets, projects, investments, and initiatives.

 

Requirements

The successful candidate will possess a minimum of 15 years of increasing leadership responsibility in seafood-related science, academic, or business settings and hold a PhD in aquaculture, marine biology, fisheries, or a related field.

Expertise within the seafood industry and credibility and a proven track record of developing constructive relationships across a diverse range of stakeholders is a must as well as experience with P&L responsibility and a background in developing and implementing strategic plans.

The role requires a proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and projects as well as an entrepreneurial approach and vision toward convening diverse stakeholders (scientific community, organizations, individuals and governments) to create solutions.

Additional qualifications include:

  • Superior oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to present to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive seafood solutions at scale and apply scientific/technical knowledge within businesses or industry. 
  • Strong leadership, management, mentorship and team building skills.
  • Prior experience working in a multicultural and geographically dispersed environment. 
  • Practical or applied knowledge in environmental responsibility, social accountability, food safety, or animal health and welfare.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence and initiative.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
