Postdoc in Microalgae Cultivation and Biomass Conversion

Job Details

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team in Tartu for a 2.5-year position focused on microalgae cultivation and thermochemical conversion, starting in September 2026.

 

The successful candidate will play a leading role in developing and optimising microalgae cultivation systems and converting the resulting biomass into value-added products such as biochar through torrefaction. This position offers the opportunity to work in an applied, interdisciplinary research environment bridging biotechnology and thermochemical processing.

 

Main Responsibilities

  • Cultivate microalgae
  • Handle the biomass harvesting
  • Process and convert the biomass via torrefaction
  • Supervise junior researchers or students where applicable
  • Analyze experimental data and lead the preparation of scientific publications and project reports
  • Contribute to the preparation and submission of competitive research funding proposals
  • Identify new funding opportunities aligned with the research area

Requirements

  • PhD in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, biotechnology, or a closely related field
  • Proven research experience in microalgae cultivation, biomass processing, or thermochemical conversion (e.g., torrefaction, pyrolysis)
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience in preparing or contributing to research funding proposals is an advantage
  • Ability to lead research activities and work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken)
