Job Details

HDR is seeking a Marine Biologist 2 to support environmental field programs throughout Canada. This unique opportunity combines field planning, conducting field surveys and completing reporting in support of projects in our Resources, Water and Transportation market sectors. The successful candidate will work on multidisciplinary projects to address current and future challenges and will work in close coordination with project team members and subject matter experts that will foster learning and skill development across multiple disciplines and project types.

As a Marine Biologist 2, the successful candidate would work with a multi-disciplinary team to contribute to a variety of marine-based projects. In general, responsibilities would include contributing to marine surveys utilizing a variety of survey methods, leading field programs including directing junior field personnel, training and coordinating Indigenous observers, preparing technical reports for clients and regulators and performing other project-related duties as needed.
 

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, Ecology, or a closely related discipline.
  • A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in marine biology, including demonstrated leadership on complex, multi stakeholder programs.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in scientific diving, certified in accordance with Canadian Standard Association Z275:4-97.
  • Understanding of provincial/territorial and federal regulatory frameworks, approval processes, and compliance requirements.
  • Proven experience in conducting marine field surveys and sampling programs, including water and sediment sampling, benthic community assessments, fish collection and processing and environmental monitoring.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead field teams in alignment with Safety, Health, and Environment policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Experience training, mentoring, and leading Indigenous monitoring crews, with a commitment to respectful and inclusive collaboration.
  • Proven experience contributing to the development of high-quality technical reports.
  • Experience working in remote or challenging environments, with adaptability to varying field conditions.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven experience working directly with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies, with strong communication and relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead field crews of two or more staff, with an emphasis on safety, efficiency, and team cohesion.
  • Willingness and ability to participate in extended field programs, sometimes under challenging or remote conditions.
     

Required Qualifications
 

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or closely related field
  • A minimum of 5 years experience managing biological/environmental projects
  • Leadership skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
