Senior Scientist: Operational and Educational Coordinator for UMSC

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who will be responsible for planning and coordinating the operational activities of UMSC, including personnel. This is an exciting opportunity the help shape this leading research infrastructure through strategic introduction of cutting-edge methodologies including, for example, but not limited to, autonomous underwater vehicles, remote sensing, hyperspectral imaging, analytical pipelines). You will perform a key function in dialogues with on-site staff, visiting groups and enhancing the ability to UMSC to provide solutions to environmental grand challenges. You will also support the development of strategies to enhance the future function of the organisation and work closely with the UMSC leadership.

PhD in Marine Observation System Resilience

As part of the Measuring What Matters project, we are now advertising for a PhD position to investigate how marine observation systems can become more resilient, scalable, and adaptive under accelerating environmental and climate change. The research will explore how environmental variables and emerging observation technologies can be combined to improve the long-term reliability, responsiveness, and usability of marine ecosystem monitoring across spatial and temporal scales.

Application deadline: 16 August 2026.

Position contact: Dr Heidi Burdett (heidi.burdett@umu.se)

Postdoctoral Scholar in Intelligent data sampling for phytoplankton monitoring

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar to join the DETERMINER project and apply your mathematical and statistical skills to explore a critical issue restricting our understanding of phytoplankton dynamics; phytoplankton monitoring frequency.

Phytoplankton constitute the base of aquatic ecosystems, and their importance is such that European directives govern their environmental status. Phytoplankton can experience short-term change (hourly scale), while currently, most monitoring programs have fortnightly or lower resolution. This creates a mismatch between the rate at which phytoplankton change status and our ability to detect that change promptly. How much information is lost through this depreciated sampling frequency remains unknown. We’re looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join this effort, combining tools from statistical learning, sparse data analysis, and time-frequency analysis to better understand how sampling frequency affects what we can detect in the data. Using high-resolution European and Baltic datasets. This postdoc will be based at UMSC with opportunities to collaborate more widely withing Umeå University. You will work with a supportive, multidisciplinary team with expertise in monitoring, modelling, and statistical tools. You will also have the opportunity to join monitoring coastal campaigns and fieldwork in the Gulf of Bothnia to better understand how monitoring programs operate.

Application deadline: 15 August 2026.

Position contact: Dr Léon Serre-Fredj (leon.serre-fredj@umu.se)

Research Assistant in Marine Biology & Biogeochemistry

You will join a vibrant international team led by Prof. Nick Kamenos and Dr Heidi Burdett, with opportunities to collaborate with diverse multidisciplinary partners with close links to the EcoChange Strategic Research Area.

The position will support research investigating how environmental change affects the functioning, resilience and ecosystem services of coastal marine ecosystems. This will combine fieldwork, laboratory experiments and computational approaches, with a particular focus on the photosynthesis, carbon cycling and biomineralisation of coastal habitats including coralline algae beds, coral reefs, seaweed stands and mangrove forests. This work will contribute to developing innovative, nature-based solutions for biodiversity conservation, coastal restoration, blue carbon and sustainable management of marine environments.
