A PhD position is available at the Norwegian College of Fishery  Science, Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics with the Environmental and Resource Economics research group (MRØ).

The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching and other duties. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The position’s field of research

The Environmental and Resource Economics Research Group (MRØ) currently consists of five permanent academic staff members, one postdoctoral researcher, and one PhD candidate. The group develops and applies bioeconomic modelling, valuation, environmental  economics, behavioural economics, as well as market and econometric analysis to address challenges related to the seafood industry, marine natural resources, and the environment. MRØ works closely with several research groups at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science, forming a strong interdisciplinary research environment.

The PhD position will operate within the research areas of the MRØ research group. Key focus areas include aquaculture economics, climate and fisheries, small-scale fisheries, and seafood markets.

The applicants must present a description outlining the academic basis of the PhD project. The project description shall not exceed 4 pages, literature references included. It must include a description of the topic, research question(s) and a justification for these choices. It should also indicate the methodologies to be used. The final project description will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor.

Requirements

Required qualifications

• A master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in economics; or a master’s degree in multidisciplinary Fisheries and Aquaculture Science with a master’s thesis in economics. For foreign education, equivalence will be assessed based on the academic content of the qualification and its relevance for the position. 
• Applicants must have good knowledge of fisheries and/or aquaculture, as well as experience with quantitative analysis.
• Applicants must have documented good English-language skills and be able to work in an international environment. Nordic applicants may document this with a secondary school diploma.

Preferred qualifications

• Background or experience in environmental and natural resource economics
• A master’s thesis related to fisheries or aquaculture

The assessment will emphasize the applicant’s potential to complete doctoral-level research, based on their master’s thesis or equivalent work, as well as any other academic publications or research. The project description will also be considered. In addition, other experience relevant to completing the PhD programme may be taken into account.
