Two Master of Science (MSc) positions are available at Auburn University (start date: January 2027). Students will be hosted by the Crustacean and Molluscan Ecology lab (P.I. Dr. Jim Stoeckel; https://agriculture.auburn.edu/directory/profile.php?id=jas0018) and the Aquatic Reproductive Physiology lab (P.I. Dr. Ian Anthony Ernest Butts; https://ianaebutts.wixsite.com/labsite) in the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (SFAAS).

 

Responsibilities and tasks: Procambarus clarkii (Red Swamp Crawfish) are simultaneously desired as an aquaculture product and reviled as an invasive species worldwide. Aquaculture practices to efficiently produce crayfish while minimizing risk of escapement and establishment of invasive populations are urgently needed. The successful candidate(s) will join a collaborative project involving Auburn University (USA), Ben Gurion University (Israel) and the USGS to develop techniques for efficient crayfish production in indoor recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), investigate genetic and physiological mechanisms controlling sexual development, and produce neofemales (genetic males that develop into functional females) for production of all-male broods and invasive species control. Student(s) will develop and refine indoor production strategies for P. clarkii during critical life-history stages. They will also provide genetic and histological samples as well as life-history information to developmental physiologists and population modelers at collaborating institutions. Student(s) will use RAS production systems at Auburn University to conduct basic and applied research to better understand developmental, physiological, and behavioral functions associated with crayfish development and reproductive behavior. Studies will focus on optimizing environmental factors (i.e., habitat, photoperiod, temperature) in RAS systems. This may include use of novel aquatic x terrestrial combinations as P. clarkii typically use a combination of aquatic and terrestrial habitat during their reproductive cycle.

 

Qualifications: We are looking for motivated candidates with a BSc in biology or similar discipline, knowledge of aquatic ecology and/or physiology, ability to carry out goal-oriented work, ability to work well with peers and collaborating institutions, and ability to obtain US driver’s license and vehicle. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Experience in reproductive physiology and/or husbandry experiences with crustacean decapods will be considered a strong asset.

 

Salary and appointment terms: $22,500/y for 2 years; we anticipate students will begin coursework and research in January 2027, depending on availability of funds.
