Farm Assistant

Pembrokeshire, Wales Full Time £13/hr

Job Details

You will be part of the Sea farms team responsible for the Câr y Môr’s Seaweed and shellfish farms, the three hectare site (at St Justinian) and the two 0.1 hectare trial sites (at Carn-ar-Wig and Porthlysgy). 60% of the teams time will be shore based planning and comprehensive record keeping in order to develop the best ways to farm each species including the equipment and procedures. This is essential to the development of Câr y Môr as a commercially viable business. As a start up business the farms are completely dependent on all other aspects of the business therefore all employed have to fully support the other operations of the society as required each day. This will range from stakeholder engagement, fund raising, dealing with customers and fishermen to processing marketing and logistics. You need to think of yourself as the business owner starting an amazing business. The ideal candidate will have marine and aquaculture experience.

Responsibilities

●       Upholding the caring and respectful culture of the Society, appreciating it has been, and continues to be, developed through pioneer investment and 100’s of hours per week of volunteering. Being prepared to regularly volunteer some of your time when possible.

●       Working as a team with all other employees and volunteer members to ensure in all aspects of the Society’s business the agreed procedures are followed with commitment and diligence

●       Having Commercial awareness - Being responsible for all parts of the business so overall financial viability is achieved.

●       Managing all aspects of the sea farms with the farm team

●       Including :

o   All seeding/harvesting and environmental and species monitoring

o   Maintaining the A grade shellfish classification, stock control records, production forecasting and organising staff, volunteers and contractors.

o   Maintaining all sites and managing the gear required

o   Developing safe working systems especially on the work barge

o   Managing relations with all necessary authorities (eg NRW, CEFAS, The Crown Estate, Trinity House, Port Health, PNCPA, Harbour Authorities, Porthstinian Boat Association,)

o   Attending study tours at other seaweed and shellfish farms in different countries.

o   Taking potential customers and investors out to farms

o   Training farm staff

Requirements

We understand that this is a new industry so please remember, all or some of the following is desirable but a commitment for every day to be a learning day is essential. Training will also be provided if you want to learn something and ask -

●       Experience of running and starting your own business

●       Knowledge of planning and operating multi species farming

●       Marine engineering experience especially mooring systems

●       Experience of commercial diving
