The Shellfish Hatchery Manager is responsible for the operation of the PACRC bivalve hatchery and microalgae production facility. Works with the Principal Investigator overseeing bivalve/invertebrate culture projects to conduct research and development for hatchery production and grow out methods for several species of bivalves and other invertebrates in Hawai’i and other locations. Species include Pacific and Eastern oysters, pearl oysters, pen shells, microalgae, macroalgae and other native species. Coordinates schedules and tasks for other hatchery employees. Oversees student assistants employed in the Workforce Training Program. Drives to project sites using UH vehicles to conduct field work, procurement, such as going to hardware stores, and transport items on the PACRC site and between campus sites. Will assist in production of polyploid oysters.

Qualifications- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Aquaculture, or related field in Science. At least three years of aquaculture and hatchery experience with bivalves or microalgae. This includes demonstrated experience producing bivalves and other invertebrates on a commercial scale; demonstrated experience with microalgae; experience overseeing nursery stages and grow-out of bivalves; experience building and installing bivalve hatchery equipment and facilities; experience with broodstock management and conditioning, as well as design and construction of conditioning systems; and experience in training or teaching aquaculture or STEM topics to diverse audiences. Proficient knowledge of bivalve and invertebrate (oysters and clams) biology, ecology and aquaculture. Proficient knowledge of aquaculture microalgae production methods. Knowledge of shellfish diseases, diagnostics and quarantine procedures. Knowledge of the operation of basic aquaculture equipment such as pumps, UV systems, filters, blowers and PVC plumbing. Knowledge of statistics and basic modeling methods. Knowledge of management principles including, but not limited to, supervising/developing employees, EEO, workplace safety, corrective/disciplinary actions, and administration of policies and procedures. ; Demonstrated ability to perform duties in a multi- cultural setting and coordinate with other employees in a harmonious fashion. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to establish work standards/expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of ongoing work for direct reports. Ability to provide guidance, motivate, and engage direct reports through effective communication and leadership. Ability to assign work and to establish work rules and acceptable levels of quality and quantity of work. Ability to review work and evaluate performance, and develop required job competencies of direct reports. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Ability and willingness to use chemicals safely. Ability to drive vehicles with manual transmission. Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds of equipment and feeds. Ability to work under hot and humid conditions
