Duties and Responsibilities

This is a 12-month tenure-track position that will be 100% administrative in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. The tenure home of the successful candidate will be determined based on their area of expertise.  The position is charged with leading a statewide program addressing key challenges facing Florida’s coastal environments and coastal resources. The position requires 1) promoting and supporting rigorous and creative research on the coastal and marine environment of Florida and the region, including applications to dependent industries and communities; 2) identifying key priorities, education needs, and communicating new findings to stakeholders and communities that rely coastal environments in collaboration with UF/IFAS Extension; 3) coordinating FSG’s activities with the National Sea Grant (NSG) program and other regional partners, including coordination and leadership on NSG committees; 4) garnering external support including working with an external advisory committee to procure and secure legislative financial support at the local, state and national levels; and 5) directing office staff based primarily in Gainesville, Florida.  More information about the FSG program and UF (the selected host institution for Florida) is provided in the Background section below.

 The Director of the Florida Sea Grant College Program:

  • Directs and administers FSG, including budget management and coordination with the state and federal agencies that fund FSG. The director has ultimate responsibility for collecting information from FSG faculty and agents for reports required by the National Sea Grant Office (NSGO), convening meetings of the Sea Grant Advisory Committee, communicating with campus coordinators, serving as the Florida delegate to the Sea Grant Association (SGA), representing Florida Sea Grant at SGA meetings, and conducting annual meetings with Florida’s congressional delegates and staff.
  • Administers and provides statewide leadership for the diverse research and outreach programs supported by FSG. This includes organizing and drafting the program’s four-year strategic plan participating in the drafting of the biennial research proposal call, various strategic funding initiatives, and student competitions.
  • Works with UF/IFAS Advancement to secure private funding and finds opportunities to increase extramural funding for research and extension, which may involve developing partnerships with other state and federal organizations that share common strategic priorities.
  • The FSG Program is an officially recognized Center by the Board of Governors that is managed by the Provost but is administratively responsible to the Senior Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources within UF/IFAS. The director works in close collaboration with several units on campus, especially with respect to the management and accomplishments of the FSG faculty and staff around the state.

 More specifically, the work includes:

  1. Serve as Principal Investigator and provide general supervision of the preparation and submission of the biennial UF institutional Sea Grant Omnibus proposal. This proposal typically includes approximately 25 research, advisory service and communications/education projects, involves several universities/state agencies, and utilizes federal/state funding of approximately $5 million per year. Similar efforts are required for submission of proposals requesting support for other NOAA initiatives.
  2. General supervision of all research, outreach/extension, advisory service, technology transfer and communications projects supported by federal and state Sea Grant funds.
  3. Defining programmatic areas of interest that may fit within the core NGS program or other NOAA initiatives. This is accomplished in cooperation with appropriate academic, state, federal and private sector representatives.
  4. Formulating and implementing procedures for the solicitation and evaluation of project proposals from the faculty and staff of all Florida institutions of higher education.
  5. Supervising arrangements for and conducting site visits that occur every five years by NGSO representatives and consultants.
  6. Maintaining liaison with the Program Officer and other personnel in the NSGO. Supporting the national office by ensuring FSG personnel actively participate in the nationwide associations and initiatives.
  7. Representing the Florida Sea Grant College Program in all activities and building partnerships across numerous diverse constituencies within and outside of Florida.




Demonstrated record of leadership with management and administrative skills, as well as a commitment to maintain and grow the national prominence of FSG programs. Candidate must have earned doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) and be qualified for an appointment at the rank of professor in one of the UF/IFAS academic departments in addition to a record of academic and professional achievement in an area relevant to the mission of Sea Grant. Candidates need to have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, leadership, multi-tasking, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. Candidates must show evidence of the skills to build cooperative and collaborative partnerships across stakeholder groups, programs, organizations and institutions. Candidates must be supportive of the teaching, research, and extension mission of the Land-Grant system and have a commitment to UF/IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.


The preferred candidate will have administrative experience at the University, State or Federal Agency level; familiarity and/or experience with a Sea Grant Program; experience with fiscal management in a higher education setting. Candidates should have substantive experience in interacting with executive agencies and legislative bodies and in identifying opportunities and solutions relating to coastal and marine resource and environmental issues, as well as support of fishing (recreational and commercial) and aquaculture industries from harvest through consumption (including food safety). The preferred candidate will espouse a team-approach philosophy and encourage a working environment of effective collaboration, support and synergy among program leadership, staff and affiliates.
