IMSEGI (International Marine Shrimp Environmental Genomics Initiative: Monitoring Ecosystems, Animals and Public Health)
Wednesday, February 24, 2016  12/30/1899 8:30:00 AM - 12/30/1899 4:30:00 PM  Chablis
Chair: Acacia Alcivar-Warren
The IMSEGI session focus on the holistic theme of "ONE HEALTH: Conserving Healthy Ecosystems, to Maintain Healthy Animals, to Protect Human Health long-term”. Ecosystem Health topics include characterization of aquatic biodiversity, emerging pathogens (Vibrio spp., Bacillus spp., etc.) species introductions, the microbiome and CO2 of sediments from mangroves and shrimp ponds (mangroveENCODE), and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as metals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs: PCBs, PAHs, crude oil) and pesticides such as the herbicide/antibiotic Glyphosate in water, and sediment of mangroves wetlands and shrimp ponds. Animal Health topics include the microbiome of shrimp gut, diseases of shrimp/shellfish, genome variation and epimutations in AHPND/EMS-causing vibrios (V. parahaemolyticus, V. harveyi) containing plasmids with Photorhabdus insect-related pirAB insecticidal toxins, mobile/transposable elements (TEs) of vibrios and shrimp, antibiotics and EDCs in aquatic species, heavy metal resistance in gut bacteria, horizontal gene transfer (HGT), antibiotics, probiotics and antimicrobial resistance (AR), inbreeding and disease susceptibility, shrimp genome rearrengements and epigenome (shrimpENCODE), the pervasive transcriptome of SPF L. vannamei, genetic pollution caused by unregulated local and international trade, novel shrimp allergens, DNA methylation of vibrios and shrimp, transgenerational epigenetics mechanisms, genetically engineered crops (GMO soybeans, corn) used in aquafeeds, performance traits of fish/shrimp selectively bred on feeds prepared with GMO crops. Public Health topics include the potential risks of AR and zoonotic diseases; long-term transgenerational assessments of health effects to shrimp, fish and people caused by the consumption of GMO-based food containing low levels of Bacillus thuringiensis cry toxin proteins, Photorhabdus-like insecticidal toxins, the herbicide/antibiotic Glyphosate and AR, and chronic diseases (obesity, diabetes type 2, allergies) associated with consumption of seafood containing low-level of EDCs such as metals, POPs, and plaguicides.
